Introduction
Today I’m going to guide you through the menu system of my brand new Canon R6 and show you how I set it up for photography. In this article, I won’t be covering any of the video settings. I’ve made a separate video for that, which I’ll link in the description below if you’re interested.
Before we start, make sure the dial on top of your camera is set to “M,” which will give you access to all the same menu items that I’ll be referring to throughout the article.
Canon R6 best settings
Here are some recommended settings for the Canon EOS R6:
- Shoot Menu 4:
- Long exp. noise reduction: Auto
- High ISO speed NR: OFF
- ISO Speed Settings:
- ISO speed range: 100-12800
- Auto Range: 100-12800
- Min. shutter speed: Auto
- Focus Settings:
- Eye tracking: Off (or set to a switched mode on the front button next to the shutter)
- Orientation-based AF mode: On
These settings are based on personal preferences and may not suit everyone’s needs. It is essential to explore your camera and learn about each setting to find the best configuration for your specific shooting style and situation.
Image Quality Settings
The first menu section is the “Red” menu. In tab one, under “Image Quality,” I have it set to only shoot compressed RAW and not to shoot JPEG at all. I’ve found no distinguishable difference in quality between normal RAW and compressed RAW, and the compressed RAW files have smaller file sizes, making them more manageable. Experiment with these settings to find what works best for you.
White Balance and Picture Style
Moving to tab three, I use a combination of auto or shade white balance, depending on the situation. For picture style, I usually leave it as is, as it only affects JPEG files, not RAW files. Lens aberration correction can be turned off as well, as it doesn’t significantly impact RAW files.
Noise Reduction and Shutter Mode
In tab four, I prefer to keep long exposure noise reduction and high ISO speed noise reduction turned off, as I prefer to handle noise reduction in post-processing. In tab six, I have the electronic first curtain shutter selected as the default shutter mode.
Image Stabilization and Touch Shutter
Moving to tab seven, the Canon R6 has an image-stabilized sensor that counters small shakes during shooting, resulting in sharper photos. I keep this feature on most of the time, except when intentionally capturing movement. Touch shutter, which allows you to immediately take a photo by touching the screen, is disabled, as I prefer selecting the focus point first and then pressing the shutter.
Autofocus Modes
Now let’s move on to the pink menu, which is for autofocus modes. For the first two menu options in tab one, I prefer to set them as custom buttons, as they are constantly changing depending on the shooting scenario. I use face tracking and one-point autofocus methods for most scenarios, which I find work great in various situations. Limiting the available autofocus methods to only these options allows for faster shooting.
Customizing Autofocus
In tab four, you can limit the available autofocus methods. I have only face tracking and one-point autofocus methods enabled and disabled the others. In tab one, I have the camera set to track people, with eye detection enabled and continuous autofocus disabled. These settings help me achieve accurate and reliable autofocus for my style of photography. I’ve also disabled touch and drag autofocus, as I find it less useful for my shooting style.
