What’s up guys! Today, we have an exciting video for you as we compare the Canon R5 and R6 in a real-world portrait shoot. As you know, I primarily shoot with the R6, while TK shoots with the R5. We wanted to find out if there are any practical differences between the two cameras. So, we’re going to test them out by shooting with each other’s cameras. Let’s get started!
Using the Canon R6
I begin the shoot with the R6, which is the camera I’m familiar with. We’re using the Tamron 35 lens for this shoot. I start by capturing some portraits with TK against the window, experimenting with different poses and angles. The R6’s servo autofocus with eye tracking performs impressively, and I’m able to get some great shots.
Using the Canon R5
Now, it’s TK’s turn to shoot with the R5. He initially mentions that the only notable difference for him is the difference in megapixels between the two cameras. However, for this style of portrait shoot, he’s not sure if it’ll make a significant difference. He proceeds to capture some portraits with me, using a big reflector to bounce light into the scene. Despite the differences in settings and dials, TK finds that shooting with the R5 feels quite similar to using his R6.
Comparison of Image Quality
After shooting with both cameras, we take a look at the raw files of the R5 and R6 side by side. The 100% zoom reveals that both cameras produce incredibly sharp images. However, due to the R5’s higher megapixel count (45MP compared to R6’s 20MP), the R5 image appears slightly more cropped in. We export the files at 12 megapixels, a resolution commonly used, and compare them. Both images still appear sharp, but upon closer inspection, there is a slight edge of sharpness in the R5 images. Though it’s challenging to tell the difference with the naked eye, the R5 images seem slightly more contrasty.
In another test, we crop the photos to focus solely on the subject’s face and export them at 12 megapixels. Surprisingly, both the R6 and R5 produce equally sharp results. The level of detail and clarity is impressive in both images.
