10 Video Life Hacks

Hey guys caleb here with dslr video shooter and in this video we’re talking about 10 camera and video hacks so let’s go ahead and get started with hack number one if you’re like me you have a ton of power cables for various lights and chargers and over time it can get pretty confusing remembering which power brick goes to which device enter the hero of the story the silver sharpie every single time i get a new light with a power cable or power brick i write down what device it goes to if the item has special specific cables i also marked Those for the ocd amongst us a label maker also works great while you’re at it you might as well label your gear with your name and phone number just in case it gets lost speaking of those annoying power bricks that come with many lights you can buy a v-mount strap That allows you to mount the brick to a light controller this system is great as it keeps everything nice and tidy on set this next tip is crazy simple every single time an sd card leaves your camera or audio recorder lock it this will prevent anyone from formatting it Accidentally once you know you have your footage imported and backed up unlock the card and you know it’s ready to be used again speaking of media on set buy enough of it so you don’t have to format if possible i recommend having enough camera and audio cards so that you can Shoot two huge gigs without having to import and reformat the cards media on a card is a great backup in and of itself once your edit is underway and you know everything’s working and you have all your footage then you can start reusing those cards every once in a while i find Myself in a situation where i can’t seem to find an angle or shot that i like for b-roll when this happens i employ a little rule or trick that i’ve come up with called fast close low and wide or fclw another way to remember it is fried Chicken life wins i found when filming objects this just seems to always look good just shoot with a fast lens to get more shallow depth of field and by putting the camera close and low you get an interesting angle that i don’t think you see a lot and by using a wide lens That is also close you get this immersive vibe like you’re right there with the object so next time you need a great shot of something and aren’t sure where to start just remember fried chicken life wins before we move on to our next tip i want to bring up the

Guides and Support

Guides that i sell over at academy.dslrvideoshooter.com and if you enjoy these videos consider picking up one of those as it supports this channel and keeps videos coming out regularly there’s a ton of camera guides and other stuff coming up in the future so check it out in the link in the description With all that out of the way let’s get back to some hacks if i could only give you one audio tip it would be to keep your friends close and your microphones closer hands down getting your microphone as close as possible to your subject will improve your audio more Than almost anything else if your audio sounds like poo move the microphone closer i’ve often filmed interviews with a tighter shot just so i could get the microphone a few inches closer the reason this works is because you’re making the source of your sound louder which allows you to lower the input Level on your camera or recorder and this reduces nasty stuff like hiss background sounds reverb or echo audio quality also changes due to what is called the proximity effect which in short raises the low end of vocals the closer you get your microphone no matter how complex your setup is a backup audio

Audio and Gear Tips

Recorder or microphone is a brilliant idea if you’re using a microphone that is connected to a camera for sound consider putting a recorder in between them this way if something happens on either device you have an audio backup i’ve even done this with super pro audio recorders just by sending the output to Something like a zoom h1 and recording on both devices at most you’ll be out 100 bucks for a cheap recorder which is way more affordable than reshooting or adr another great tip is to put together what i call the video emergency kit a little case or bag that you can keep in The side of your backpack or maybe in your car so that if you lose gear you forget gear heaven forbid your gear is stolen you have a couple backups to get you through your shoot things like an audio recorder a cheap microphone definitely a couple sd cards are things That are really handy and i hate to admit it but a couple of times i have either forgotten sd cards or some way to capture audio on set so having these things in an emergency kit is really really handy and very affordable insurance a key light setup like this is Often used these days to create beautiful soft light on your talent or yourself the only problem with this setup is the size of everything you’ve got a soft box a light head and in some cases a light controller and a power supply which makes packing everything More difficult one hack i’ve used a few times is to keep the softbox but ditch the big light next using this bowens mount adapter you can mount the softbox to a stand and clamp or tape a smaller light inside of the softbox you can use any light as long as it has Enough output for your needs so your key light could go from something like this when it comes to packing your gear to this pretty sweet right here’s what it looks like in use also keep in mind you can switch to a smaller bones mount softbox if you want to shrink the Overall size even more two words infinite uses bongo ties i love these things for rigging and attaching just about anything to anything else back when i was working full time as a camera operator i would keep one or two bongo ties on my wrist like a bracelet so that At any moment i could rig something up they’re really affordable and you can do so much with these things so those are my 10 production tips let me know which tip was your favorite and also share your hacks in the comments below and who knows maybe i’ll feature them in an Upcoming video that’s it for me thank you so much for watching and i will see you in the next video
