There are plenty of affordable options for cameras, lenses, and accessories that can help you get started on your photography journey without draining your bank account. In this blog post, I will share my recommendations for what to buy when starting photography on a budget in 2024. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking to upgrade your current gear, these affordable options will help you capture stunning images without breaking the bank.

…the difference in quality between different lenses is huge compared to the differences between camera bodies. So, with that being said, our next purchase is going to be a lens. And if I had to recommend just one lens to someone starting out in photography, it would be the Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6. This lens is incredibly versatile and covers a wide range of focal lengths, making it perfect for capturing a variety of different subjects and scenes. It also has optical image stabilization, which is great for shooting in low light conditions or when shooting handheld. It’s a great all-around lens that will allow you to experiment with different focal lengths and really get a feel for what type of photography you enjoy.

Next up, we have our second lens, which is the Sony 50mm f/1.8. This lens is a prime lens, which means it has a fixed focal length, but what it lacks in versatility, it makes up for in image quality. Adding all of these items together, we come to a grand total of £630, which is well under our budget of £1,000.
