In this video right here, I’m going to show you how I took this photo and made it look like this by doing a lot of cool things within Lightroom.
Starting with Auto
The first thing I often like to do is to click the Auto button to see what Lightroom comes up with. This is just a nice starting point that I can tweak from here. I may drop the highlights down and adjust the shadows a bit.
Cropping for Instagram
Next, I like to find the proper crop. For Instagram, I use the 4:5 ratio. By pressing “o” on the keyboard, I can see the different cropping guidelines and frame the photo as I see fit.
Isolating the Subject
Before moving on to tone adjustments and color grading, I like to isolate the subject as much as possible. I begin by playing around with masks. For example, I can enhance the sky by adjusting the exposure, highlights, and haze. This helps create a more dramatic effect. I may also adjust the saturation to balance the colors.
Perfecting the Mask
Lightroom’s AI auto-mask feature may not always be perfect. In such cases, I can manually adjust the mask by adding or subtracting specific areas using a brush tool. This allows me to fine-tune the mask and ensure it doesn’t affect unwanted areas of the photo.
Adding Radial Gradient Filters
I like to use radial gradient filters to further enhance the subject’s presence in the photo. By opening up the middle and adjusting various settings like shadows, highlights, clarity, and contrast, I can make the subject stand out even more.
Additional Masks and Adjustments
Using masks, I can continue to target specific areas, such as brightening up the subject or enhancing the boat. This involves playing with settings like exposure, shadows, contrast, and highlights to achieve the desired effect. I can also use a brush tool for more precise adjustments.
Final Touches
To further enhance the photo, I may apply gradient filters with different exposure levels and gradients. This helps create depth and adds subtle darkening or lightening effects. Overall, spending time on these adjustments can greatly improve the final result.
