You Have To See It With Your Own Eyes! Is the Sony A7IV the ULTIMATE Hybrid Photo/Video Camera!?

In 2018, Sony released the A73, and it was a huge success in the full-frame mirrorless camera world. But a lot has changed since then. Some of the competing brands have released their own cameras with similar or better specs. Sony has some newer technology in their own cameras, and the camera world in general is just asking for more. Three years after its predecessor, we now have the Sony A74. Sony was kind enough to lend me one of the early units to try out and I’m excited to share with you what I found.

Practical Use

Instead of just reading specs or doing nerdy tests, I took the Sony A74 to one of the most beautiful places on the planet, Peyto Lake. I made a quick travel vlog showcasing the video quality, slow motion, low-light performance, and more. After the vlog, I’ll share some of the photography I captured with the camera on the trip as well. Let’s discuss some of the main upgrades I noticed from using this camera in a practical sense, the things that made a real difference in my work.

Experience at Peyto Lake

Peyto Lake is known for its stunning blue water and unique shape resembling a dog head when viewed from a specific angle. The snowfall added to the beauty of the location, making it a perfect setting to test the Sony A74.

Using the Sony A74

Upon turning on the A74, I immediately noticed its speed and powerful processor. The autofocus capabilities, including face detection, eye detection, and animal eye autofocus, worked flawlessly in both video and photo modes. The camera also features 10-bit video codecs, allowing for S log 3 and H.265 options.

If shooting in 4k at 60 frames per second, there is a super 35 crop, providing a 1.5x crop factor. While some may find this limiting, I found it manageable for my shooting needs.

Future Tests and Feedback

While this practical test revealed many positive aspects of the Sony A74, I plan to conduct more in-depth tests in the future. I invite you to share your questions and curiosities about the Sony A74 in the comments, and I will address them in upcoming videos.

Overall, the Sony A74 proves to be a powerful hybrid photo/video camera with advanced features and capabilities. Its performance at Peyto Lake showcased its versatility and reliability in various shooting conditions. Stay tuned for more insights and tests on the Sony A74.
