Why I Want To Stop Using Leica | Honest Pros & Cons After 4 Years
Introduction
All right, so after four years of using Leica cameras, I’m considering moving away from the brand and going back to the camera system I started with – Nikon. Yes, Nikon. The Z9 is an incredible camera, and by the end of this article, you’ll understand why I’m weighing my options and considering making this decision. In this article, I will provide my honest thoughts on Leica cameras after four years, discussing the pros and cons of using their cameras.
My Perspective on Leica Cameras
What inspired this article is the unique perspective I have on Leica cameras. Unlike most YouTubers who use these cameras as conversation pieces, I have been using the SL2 as my main camera for everything, including cinematic videos, social media content, and professional work since 2020. Prior to that, I had been using Leica cameras since before 2020, starting with the QP in May 2019. This love for Leica ultimately led me to the SL2 and recently the Q2 Hodinkee Edition. In this article, I want to share my honest thoughts on using Leica cameras.
Pros of Using Leica
1. High-quality results
Using Leica cameras, I have achieved some of the best photos of my career. The system consistently delivers excellent image quality, making it an ideal choice for professional work and personal projects.
2. Unique brand and craftsmanship
Leica cameras have a certain charm and allure that cannot be replicated by any other brand. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in their design and build quality. Owning and using a Leica camera is a statement in itself.
3. Exceptional lens lineup
One of the biggest advantages of using Leica cameras is their exceptional lens lineup. Leica lenses are renowned for their optical performance and the unique rendering they provide. The lenses alone are often a deciding factor for many photographers when choosing the Leica system.
4. Minimalistic camera lineup
Leica’s limited camera lineup, comprising the Q system, M system, and SL system, may be seen as a limitation, but it also adds to the charm of the brand. The simplicity and focus on these specific systems allow Leica to maintain a high standard of quality and precision.
Cons of Using Leica
1. Haters and judgment
Unfortunately, using Leica cameras often attracts judgment and criticism from others. Some people view it as a way to seek attention or gain clout. However, as a dedicated photographer, my focus is on creating art, not impressing others. The opinions of others should not deter you from using a camera system that aligns with your vision and goals.
2. High cost
One cannot ignore the fact that Leica cameras and accessories come with a premium price tag. From camera bodies to batteries and accessories, everything related to Leica is expensive. This can be a significant barrier, especially for professionals or enthusiasts on a tight budget.
3. Battery life limitations
Battery life is a frequent concern when it comes to Leica cameras. In the case of the SL2, it has the worst battery life I have ever experienced. The camera drains quickly, even when the battery indicator shows halfway. This can be frustrating, especially when shooting on-location or for extended periods without access to spare batteries.
4. Video capabilities
While the video quality from Leica cameras is exceptional, they often lag behind in terms of video features and functionality. For example, the lack of a flip-out screen and limited autofocus capabilities can hinder certain video shooting scenarios. Additionally, the available picture profiles may not be suitable for all types of video projects, leaving filmmakers with limited options.
5. Limited camera and lens options
Leica’s camera lineup is limited, offering only a few choices for professionals. The Q system has a fixed lens, the M system relies on manual focus, and the SL system is the primary option for video. While this simplicity is part of Leica’s appeal, it can be frustrating for professionals who require a more diverse range of cameras and lenses for different purposes.
6. Expensive lens options
Leica lenses, while exceptional in quality, are expensive. There are limited options for creators, with the M line being manual focus and the SL line being prohibitively costly. This can make it challenging for photographers and videographers who want to explore Leica’s renowned glass without breaking the bank.
Conclusion
After four years of using Leica cameras, I have had a remarkable experience in terms of image quality and craftsmanship. The exceptional lens lineup and minimalist camera offerings are undeniable strengths of the brand. However, the cost, battery life limitations, video capabilities, and limited camera and lens options are significant drawbacks. As I consider moving away from Leica and exploring other camera systems like Nikon’s Z9, I weigh both the pros and cons to make an informed decision about my photographic journey.
