Why Filming “Open Gate” Is The Next Big Thing For Video Creators

Have you ever wondered what happens to the rest of the image from your camera sensor when you’re shooting video? Most modern hybrid photo video cameras today have a sensor that’s usually a 3×2 ratio. When shooting photos, we typically get a 3×2 image. However, when shooting video, it crops off the top and bottom, resulting in a 16×9 image. But what if you had the ability to record every single pixel from the entire 3×2 sensor and then choose which part of it you actually wanted to use for your final image? This is what people mean when they refer to shooting “Open Gate” video, and it’s poised to be the next big thing for video creators.

Understanding Open Gate

The term “Open Gate” itself is a holdover from shooting with film, where there was a physical film gate that created the space to allow light to hit the film. Open gate, in the case of film, meant that the opening allowed for the light to hit the entire recordable area of the film with no crop. Similarly, when we refer to open gate on a digital sensor, it means that we’re recording using the entire size of the sensor.

The S5 Mark IX from Panasonic

As a part of my partnership with Panasonic, I’ve had the opportunity to shoot with the Lumix S5 Mark IX, one of the few cameras in its class that offers an open gate mode. It has a 24-megapixel sensor with a 3×2 ratio, which allows for 6K 3×2 full sensor readout. This results in a frame that’s nearly 6,000 by 4,000 pixels, much larger than your typical 4K resolution.

Advantages of Open Gate

This aspect ratio and resolution offer several advantages, including the ability to shoot one time and reframe for multiple purposes. Whether capturing both horizontal and vertical versions for posting on multiple platforms or easily reframing for different compositions, open gate provides flexibility and higher quality output.

With the S5 Mark IX and external monitors, you can easily add frame markers to compose your frame, keeping in mind different compositions that you might be outputting later. It enables both horizontal and vertical deliverables, catering to the demands of video clients and creators working across multiple platforms.

Fake Camera Movement and Aesthetic Options

Additionally, shooting in open gate allows for creating fake camera movements without any loss in quality. The 6K video starting from a place of just filling the 16×9 frame provides the opportunity to keyframe movement, both horizontally and vertically. This flexibility extends to choosing your output ratio to match the platform and for aesthetic reasons.

Ultimately, open gate video offers a new level of creative control and flexibility for video creators, revolutionizing the way videos are shot and produced. As more cameras begin to adopt this feature, it’s undoubtedly the next big thing for video creators looking to elevate their content.
