Although I was unable to compare the Ninja 400 II directly with the Amiron 200x, I believe that the Ninja 400 II is a superior alternative for on-location shoots.
Improvements and Faults
The Ninja 400 II addresses some of the faults of its predecessor, the Ninja 200, to varying degrees of success. It has a quieter fan, which can be turned off completely. The light also comes with a standard Bowens mount, eliminating the need for an adapter. Additionally, the cables and connectors of the Ninja 400 II are more robust.
However, the Ninja 400 II has a few shortcomings, such as a non-responsive remote app and limited output control compared to competitors like the Aputure 120D II.
Comparing Output and Performance
In terms of output, the Ninja 400 II is a full stop brighter than the Ninja 200, with good color rendition. However, it falls slightly behind the Aputure 120D II in terms of brightness and control over output. The 120D II allows for finer and broader control down to one percent, resulting in a dimmer output compared to the Ninja 400 II at the same setting.
Remote App and Battery Performance
One area where the Ninja 400 II falls short is its remote app, which is not yet reliable. This affects the ease of use, especially for those who rely on remote app controls for their lighting setups.
Additionally, when running on battery power, the Ninja 400 II reduces its output to 55 percent to maximize battery life and protect the unit from thermal damage. While this may be a common practice, it is worth noting that the Aputure 120D II also reduces output on battery power.
