Are you considering buying a 360 camera but unsure about the workflow involved? Look no further! In this blog post, we will discuss the essential aspects of the 360 workflow that you must consider before making a purchase. With the rising popularity of 360-degree content, it is crucial to understand the entire process, from capturing the footage to the final editing and sharing. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional, understanding the workflow will help you make informed decisions when it comes to choosing the right 360 camera for your needs. So, let’s dive into the fascinating world of 360-degree content creation and discover the key elements of its workflow!

David, you keep talking about the 360 workflow having an extra step called reframing. What does that mean and how do you do it? Great question! Let’s talk about that today. Today was going to be a comparison test between the Insta360 ONE X2 and the GoPro MAX. When I made my video about the ONE X2, everybody kind of said, “Well, there have been so many updates to the GoPro MAX. How does the GoPro MAX compare to the ONE X2?” I will make that video, but today, it’s raining in San Diego, and I feel like that kind of weather doesn’t really scream action camera comparison. So, since the weather’s poopy today, we’re going to answer this question about how to reframe footage. I’m going to do it today in my favorite way. You can totally bring it into the apps on the computer; you can do it in Premiere and Final Cut. But the most fun way, I think, to do it is in the mobile app. And specifically today, we’re going to do it in the Insta360 mobile app. I think the app on the Insta360 is a little bit better. I’ll show you when we do the comparison between these two cameras. I’ll show you why I think that is. But today, we’re going to focus on how to do it in the Insta360 app because I think it’s fun. Actually, it’s actually fun to do in the app. Before we jump into that though, hit that like button below. It is so helpful for this channel when you hit that like button. It’s like you saying, “Hey, I like what you do. I’d like to see more of it.” Like button, thank you. And today’s video is sponsored by… well, it’s sponsored by me. It’s sponsored by the merch shop. Go shoot over the merch shop, pick yourself up a t-shirt, pick yourself up a hoodie, maybe a sweet sticker. These are those like vinyl stickers where it’s just the letter on there, you know? Like you put it on and then you peel off the top part. Yeah, head over there, grab yourself a t-shirt, hoodie, sticker, helps the channel, helps make more videos like this one. Okay, let’s get into it.

The 360 Workflow

The 360 workflow is a little different than kind of a normal camera’s workflow or a normal action camera’s workflow. With a normal-facing action camera, the workflow is basically you go out and you shoot, and while you shoot, you’re looking, you’re pointing the camera at things. With a 360 camera, what you’re doing is you’re filming the whole sequence without having to think about where you’re pointing the camera. In post, you have to tell the footage where to look, where the camera should be pointing at what time. The 360 workflow is basically: you film, import the footage onto your phone or computer, reframe the footage to tell it where to look during that specific time, export the footage, and then start editing.

Reframing Footage

Now, let’s talk about the process of reframing footage using the Insta360 app. Firstly, connect the Insta360 ONE X2 to the app. In the app, go to the album and camera section, where you can see all the files on the camera. Unlike the GoPro, with the Insta360, you don’t have to transfer the files to your phone before reframing. You can reframe the video clips while they’re still on the camera, which is a major time save. Once you select a clip, you can trim it to include the specific part you want to reframe. For example, if you only want to focus on the part where you’re skiing down a hill, you can trim the clip to start and end at that specific section.
