Hi, I’m Dustin Abbott. Happy New Year to all of you, and today we are going to jump into one of our early reviews for 2024, and that is of the E-mount version of the Viltrox Pro 27mm F1.2. Like the E-mount version of the 75mm F1.2, I expected a straight across port when it first came out on Fuji X Mount. However, my experience with lenses that release on multiple mounts is that it’s basically the same lens that is just ported over for different lens mounts. That’s not what Viltrox did with the 75mm F1.2. Instead, we got a lens that surprisingly had a number of additional features on E-mount.

Core Upgrades on E-mount

One of the core upgrades on the E-mount version includes an AF-MF switch, a focus hold or custom button, and even an option for aperture iris de-click. The autofocus on E-mount is also improved, largely because not only do Viltrox lenses work a little bit better on Sony, but Sony has a more robust autofocus system, particularly when it comes to the fringes. The 27mm F1.2 has a slightly tighter than 40mm full-frame equivalency, making it a really great normal lens. It provides a little bit wider framing than 50mm, allowing for more flexibility while offering a huge maximum aperture of F1.2 and shallow depth of field results for various photography opportunities.

Comparison to Sony Equivalents

Compared to Sony equivalents, the Viltrox Pro 27mm F1.2 is larger and heavier than the older and expensive lenses, but it offers a much larger maximum aperture and better image quality, making it a versatile lens for a wide range of photography scenarios. Its only real disadvantage is the size and weight, but the benefits far outweigh this drawback.

Physical Size and Weight

The Viltrox Pro 27mm F1.2 on E-mount is almost identical in size and weight to the X-mount version. It measures 82mm in diameter, 92mm in length, and weighs 571g. While it may not be a lightweight lens on APS-C, it is still a natural fit on cameras like the A7R Mark 5 in APS-C mode. Its features, including the AF-MF switch, function button, and aperture de-click option, make it a premium lens with a lot of versatility.

The lens is thoroughly weather-sealed with at least 13 seal points, providing moisture resistance and durability. The included lens hood is not particularly shallow and does not bayonet tightly, which is a minor complaint, but the overall build quality of the lens is superb. The manual focus ring is well-damped and provides a smooth, tactile experience. Additionally, the inclusion of a USB-C port allows for firmware updates to continue improving the lens performance.

Overall, the Viltrox Pro AF 27mm F1.2 E-mount lens is a significant upgrade from its X-mount counterpart, offering enhanced features and performance on Sony cameras. Its impressive image quality, maximum aperture, and versatility make it a valuable addition to any photographer’s kit, proving to be better than ever on Sony E-mount.
