Introduction
In the beginning of 2020, I moved into an old attic space to start recording my YouTube videos. Over the years, I expanded and finalized my studio setup, but I realized that I had forgotten an important component – the heart of the studio. The Current Setup
Let’s take a look at my current setup. I have a Ubiquiti UniFi Security Gateway, a Philips Bridge for controlling the lights, and a Google router as our main router. As I’ve wanted to get fiber internet into the studio, I have been relying on 4G and 5G networks. From the security gateway, there is an ethernet cable connected to a switch, which connects various devices including my computer, NAS units, printer, and security system. This setup worked, but without a proper system in place.
The Studio Expansion
I expanded my studio into three rooms – the office, the studio room, and the lounge. Unfortunately, I didn’t consider the connectivity between these rooms and relied on Wi-Fi and mesh points for internet access throughout the entire studio. While this setup worked, it could definitely be improved.
Enter Ubiquiti UniFi
That’s where Ubiquiti UniFi comes into play. With Ubiquiti UniFi products, I aimed to improve the connectivity and performance of my studio network. I decided to upgrade my cameras to the Ubiquiti UniFi G5 Pro cameras and replace my existing router with a Netgear Nightall router. Additionally, I added a UniFi Network Flex Mini for additional ethernet ports and a UniFi Dream Machine Pro for a comprehensive network management solution.
The Upgrade Process
I began by replacing my old cameras with the Ubiquiti UniFi G5 Pro cameras. These cameras are power over ethernet, eliminating the need for extra cables. I then installed the Netgear Nightall router in a strategic location and connected it to the switch. To organize the ethernet cables, I used custom lengths and cable management tools.
Testing and Results
After setting up the new network, it was time to test it. I was impressed by the performance of the Ubiquiti UniFi cameras, which offered power over ethernet and three times optical zoom. In the back end, the UniFi portal allowed me to monitor and control the network with ease. I could view real-time video recordings and even download specific segments if needed.
