Embarking on an underwater portrait photography shoot can be both thrilling and challenging. In this tutorial, we will provide you with some essential tips to help you capture stunning underwater portraits.

Preparation is Key

Before diving into the water, ensure that you have the necessary equipment and accessories. This includes a waterproof camera housing to protect your camera, a wetsuit for comfort and warmth, and any additional props or costumes you may need for the shoot.

Tips for a Successful Shoot

1. Ensure that the water temperature is at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit to provide a comfortable environment for both the photographer and the model.

2. Use wide-angle lenses, such as a 16 to 35 millimeter lens, for capturing expansive underwater scenes.

3. Due to auto focus difficulties underwater, utilize a single center focus point and compose your shots accordingly.

4. Optimal lighting conditions typically occur between 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., so plan your shoot during this timeframe for the best results.

5. Flowy, colorful dresses can add drama and movement to your underwater portraits, enhancing the overall visual impact of the images.

Lessons Learned

Reflecting on a recent underwater photoshoot, it became apparent that there is a steep learning curve when it comes to capturing images beneath the surface. From grappling with swimming abilities to adjusting to the cold temperature of the water, each aspect presented its own challenge.

Special thanks goes to our model, Kyra, who displayed unwavering resilience and professionalism throughout the shoot. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the team at All Tech’s for their assistance in providing underwater housing and invaluable tips for the project.
