This is Arguably, the BEST Portrait lens Sony has ever made

One of the first lenses that I ever fell in love with was the 135 millimeter f2 from Canon. It gave me a unique look that only a 200 millimeter f2 can beat. Recently, Sony released their own 135 1.8 lens, and I had the opportunity to be part of the launch event. However, as a portrait photographer, I already owned the 85 1.4, my go-to focal length, and a 70-200 2.8. So, I was initially skeptical about the usefulness of the 135 1.8 lens.

The Convenience of the 85mm 1.4

The 85 1.4 lens is much easier and more convenient to use for portraits. It is smaller and lighter, making it ideal for shooting in various locations, including the city. In terms of convenience, the 85mm 1.4 would be my first recommendation for anyone looking to shoot portraits.

Comparing the 135mm 1.8 with the 85mm 1.4

To replicate the frame of the 135mm, I attached an 85mm 1.4 lens to my Sony A1 mid-video. Visually, the difference between the two lenses is not significant. The 85mm 1.4 still makes more sense for portraits and would be my top recommendation for shooting people. So, what is the point of getting a 135mm lens?

The Appeal of the 135mm 1.8

While I do have buyer’s remorse due to already owning multiple 85mm lenses, a 70-200, and even a 200mm f2, I still see the appeal of the 135mm 1.8 lens. It offers a unique look that the 85mm cannot replicate. Furthermore, the compact form factor of the 135mm lens is a major selling point for me.

Other Options and Comparisons

Apart from Sony’s 135mm 1.8, there are two other options available: the Samyang and Sigma 135mm 1.8 lenses. The Samyang is priced around a thousand dollars, which is a good price point. Although I have not used the Samyang lens, I have compared the Sigma and Sony 135mm lenses in terms of image quality, and they were almost identical. Ultimately, I chose the Sony lens for its native autofocus performance.

The 135mm 1.8 lens from Sony offers a unique look that the 85mm cannot replicate. While the convenience and versatility of the 85mm make it a top recommendation for portrait photographers, the 135mm lens has its own appeal. It provides a similar aesthetic to the renowned 200mm f2 lens in a much smaller and more compact form factor. If you have ever used a 135mm 1.8 lens, I would love to hear your thoughts and how it compares to the 85mm.
