This $200 Video Light is Incredible! (Aputure 100D/200D Review)

Introduction

Aperture has just entered the large chip LED budget light market with the new Amaran 100D and 200D. In this article, we will take a closer look at these lights, answer burning questions, and compare them to popular budget lights like the SL60. We will also explore whether these lights make Aperture’s more expensive lights obsolete and if you can expect the same Aperture quality from these $200 lights.

Overview

Aperture has added four new lights to their line, including the 100D, the 200D, the 100X, and the 200X. The ‘D’ signifies daylight-only, while the ‘X’ models sport bi-color functionality. The number next to these letters indicates the power of each light – 100 or 200 watts.

Unboxing and Design

Upon unboxing, the lights are packed in foam rather than a bag, emphasizing Aperture’s ability to keep the price low. The 100D is priced at $200, and the 200D at $300. The light head shares similarities with the 120D but has more plastic and a smaller elbow joint. The built-in umbrella holder is a nice touch, making the operation simple and efficient.

Operation and Modifiers

Operating the light is simple – plug it in, turn it on, and change the brightness with the knob at the back. Adjusting brightness with the knob or pressing it in to change the output in 20 increments can be viewed on the display. The lights can be synced with the Sidus Link app, enabling control from a phone or tablet. Using modifiers is as easy as attaching them to the Bowen’s mount on the light.

Light Output and Color Quality

The 200D outperforms other lights in its range, even rivaling the Aputure 300D Mark II. Color quality and temperature are also impressive. The sl60 surprised with the highest CR score, and color temperatures and tint biases were good for budget LED lights.

Cons

Despite their impressive performance, the lights do have some imperfections. Firstly, the overall build quality isn’t on par with Aperture’s more expensive options. The use of 48 volts means using batteries is nearly impossible. Additionally, the chip design doesn’t work well with Aperture’s hard modifiers, and the 200D has a loud fan noise, making it unsuitable for sound-sensitive environments. The reflector dish also has a significant fall-off after the punchy center spot.

Conclusion

Despite these cons, the Aputure 100D and 200D lights are game-changers in the budget light market. Their affordability, impressive light output, and color quality make them stand out among their competitors. While they may not be perfect, they offer incredible value for their price, and with some workarounds, they can be a valuable addition to any filmmaker’s toolkit.
