The Valley

THE VALLEY

Since May of 2023, I’ve been working on a personal project that I’ve been meaning to do for the last 20 years. I’ve now been a photographer for two decades and never ever have I made a photo book, so this year I set a personal goal of mine to go out and capture fresh content with the specific goal to put into a book. I want to use photos that I went out and specifically made for this book, and in doing so, I’ve been learning a lot about the difference in taking photos versus making photos.

Exploring The Valley

One of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been to is The Valley, particularly Monument Valley with its red rocks and vast landscapes that stretch across Arizona and Utah. The breathtaking scenes and epic landscapes that this region offers are unmatched. This fascination with The Valley began when I saw a picture from Peter Lick titled “The Ghost.” It was a shot that I desperately wanted to capture – a bucket shot before the term even existed.

Back then, it was easier to visit these slot canyons with fewer tourists, private tours, and the freedom to set up shots and spend hours in these incredible places. However, things have changed, and it’s not the same today. Despite the challenges, I was determined to fulfill my dream of shooting a slot canyon.

A Photo Adventure

I embarked on this photo adventure with a mix of film and digital cameras. The Mamiya 7 II, a medium format rangefinder camera, was my choice for film photography. Capturing images on 120 film was a whole new experience compared to my Canon R5 digital camera. Throughout the trip, I documented the journey with a digital camera while still shooting on my trusted M6 film camera.

During the trip, I had the opportunity to meet Don, a man from the Navajo community, who shared insights into the culture and history of the people living on this land. Don took us to various picturesque locations, explaining their significance and how they came to be.

Making Photos

One of my favorite photographers, Matt Barnes, once said, “There’s a difference between taking photos and making photos.” He explained that his interest lies in creating photos rather than simply capturing them. In this trip, I wanted to make a photo that goes beyond a simple snapshot. Through careful planning and collaboration with Don, we organized a photoshoot on the edge of a cliff in Monument Valley, capturing both the essence of the landscape and the cultural significance of the location.

The process of shooting film added a new dimension to my photography. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to see the world from a new perspective. Film photography connected me with nature and the landscapes in a way that digital photography couldn’t. I believe this unique experience and the resulting photos will be the heart of my photography book.
