The ULTIMATE LIGHT SHAPING TOOL for PHOTO and VIDEO

Shout out to our list for sponsoring this video. This light shaping tool is the kind of product that can instantly elevate your work, and I know everyone says that on YouTube, but I’m being for real. Being able to sculpt and shape light in an infinite amount of ways can bring an edginess to your work that will allow you to stand out.

The Godox SA17 Light Projector

See that window projection right there behind me? I’m using a Godox SA17 light projector, which I’ve made countless videos on. I love that thing. But the Lindsey Adler Optical Spot addresses some of the biggest limitations and issues that I have with the Godox projector, but at the same time, it isn’t perfect.

Mounting Options

The biggest flaw with the Godox SA17 is the limited space in the Bowens mount. Since I am a Westcott FJ400 strobe user, it won’t mount. But with the Optical Spot, I could fit it right onto my Godox RGB light. The Optical Spot can mount to any strobe or LED light that I have in the studio, making it a more versatile option.

Power and Lighting Control

One of the biggest benefits of the Optical Spot is its power. When using it with my FJ400 strobe, I have a lot more power compared to the Godox SA17. Additionally, the Optical Spot has light screens built directly into the unit, making it easier to use and shape the light compared to the Godox projector that requires additional screens to be purchased separately.

Heat and Workflow

The Godox SA17 can get extremely hot when used with an LED light, which can burn you and slow down your workflow. In contrast, the Optical Spot remains cool to the touch, allowing for uninterrupted shooting. This feature significantly enhances the overall workflow.

Light Shaping Possibilities

With the Optical Spot, you can create various light shapes, such as a slit of light. Its versatility allows for precise framing and composition. The lens options, including the 150 millimeter lens, provide a narrow beam that can be focused and defocused. However, if you have a small studio, this could be limiting.

Gobo and Lens Interchangeability

When using gobos, the Optical Spot makes it easier and faster to change them compared to the Godox SA17. The gobos from both brands are interchangeable, but it’s worth noting that they can be expensive to purchase. Additionally, the optical spot has a Canon EF mount, allowing for wider projection options if you have Canon EF lenses available. However, non-Canon shooters may face limitations in this aspect.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both the Godox SA17 and the Lindsay Adler Optical Spot have their pros and cons. While the Godox SA17 offers versatility with its wider range of lenses and accessories, the Optical Spot provides better light control, ease of use, and compatibility with a variety of strobes and LED lights. Ultimately, the choice depends on your specific needs and priorities as a photographer or videographer.
