In this article, I will discuss the improvements I noticed after the firmware update, the image and video quality, and the overall performance of the camera.
Firmware Update and Autofocus
The most significant improvement I noticed after updating the firmware of the Nikon Z7II is the eye detection autofocus. Previously, it struggled with smaller faces and would often lose focus. However, after the update, the camera can now track the eye even when the face is small in the frame. This improvement is especially noticeable when shooting handheld b-roll. The eye tracking on this camera is now on par with Canon and Sony.
Image and Video Quality
The image quality of the Nikon Z7II is exceptional. The colors, resolution, and dynamic range are top-notch. It excels in both recovering shadows and preserving highlights, which is crucial for my photography. When it comes to video, the camera offers 4K 60fps recording. While the quality is great, it does have a slight crop compared to cameras like the Canon R5 and Sony A7SIII. Nevertheless, the footage still looks stunning.

The Nikon Z7II is a flagship dual-camera that ticks most of the boxes. It has excellent ergonomics, dual card slots, and one of the best electronic viewfinders in the market. The camera also has a dirty HDMI output, allowing hassle-free recording of the electronic viewfinder. The high-resolution touchscreen is another standout feature. Additionally, the shutter sound on the Z7II is quite pleasing.
Areas for Improvement
While the Nikon Z7II has many positive aspects, there are a few areas that could be improved. One notable drawback is the lack of fast aperture glass in the Z system. While there are f/1.8 lenses and the 50mm f/1.2 lens, there’s still room for more variety. Another downside is the autofocus performance in the auto area AF mode. It sometimes lags and struggles to properly focus, especially on random objects. However, this can be easily resolved by using the single-point or wide-large point autofocus options.
Conclusion
After using the Nikon Z7II for 2 months, I can confidently say that I am impressed with its overall performance.
