Apparently, a ton of professionals didn’t know about it, so you’re in good company!

Problems Solved

If you are working in Lightroom a lot, today’s quick tip is a must-know because it solves three major problems:

  1. Massive file sizes
  2. Editing from external hard drives
  3. Sending massive batches of images for edit

Massive File Sizes

If you are shooting with new cameras like the Sony A7R 2 or the latest Canon, the file sizes are massive. Every time you press the shutter button, it creates a large file which can lead to huge amounts of data to work with in Lightroom.

Editing from external hard drives

Most photographers edit from external hard drives, which can be a much slower process than editing on the internal drive. Working with thousands of images from an external hard drive on your laptop can be challenging.

Sending massive batches of images for edit

Wedding, portrait, and commercial photographers often send their massive batches of images out for edit. Sending large amounts of data for editing purposes can be a cumbersome task.

The Solution – Smart Previews

The feature inside Lightroom called smart previews solves all three of these problems. Smart previews are small versions of the original photos that retain all the depth and color information, allowing you to make edits and corrections without working with massive file sizes. Smart previews reduce the file size, making it easier to work with and edit in Lightroom.

How to Create Smart Previews

There are two ways to create smart previews in Lightroom. The first way is during the importing process, where you can select the option to build smart previews. The second way is to select existing photos and build smart previews from the library.

During Import

When importing photos, simply select the ‘build smart previews’ option and Lightroom will create smart previews for all the imported photos.

From Existing Photos

If you already have photos in Lightroom, you can select all the photos and build smart previews from the library menu. Once created, you can see both the original and the smart preview when editing.

Conclusion

Smart previews in Lightroom are a game-changer for photographers dealing with large file sizes and external editing processes. It’s a must-know feature for anyone working with Lightroom regularly, especially for professional photographers. By utilizing smart previews, you can efficiently manage and edit your photos without the constraints of massive file sizes.

So, if you haven’t already explored smart previews in Lightroom, give it a try and see how much time and effort it can save you in your editing workflow.

That’s all for today’s quick tip. Stay tuned for more useful tips and tricks!
