The MOST EXPENSIVE Camera We’ve Ever Reviewed! Phase One XC

Are you ready to take your photography to the next level? If you’re in the market for a professional-grade camera that delivers impeccable image quality and unparalleled performance, then the Phase One XC might be just what you’re looking for. As one of the most expensive cameras we’ve ever reviewed, this beast of a camera comes with a hefty price tag, but it also promises to deliver exceptional results. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the Phase One XC, its features, and capabilities, and explore whether it’s worth the investment for professional photographers or enthusiasts who demand the best.

Welcome back petapixel viewers!

It is Chris Nichols here today and I am playing with the most expensive camera I have ever touched – the Phase One XC. Let’s see if all that extra cash actually brings me ecstasy!

So there it is, the Phase One XC with the 150 megapixel IQ4 digital back. This camera is insanely expensive and close to only 10-12 of these being made monthly. It’s a very limited edition camera and is a truly fascinating piece of photographic kit. Jordan and I only have this camera for today, so let’s take it out and see what we can get.

Design and Features

The Phase One XC is intended to be a very compact, portable travel version of the X series of cameras from Phase 1. It does not have interchangeable lenses, but comes with a fixed Rodenstock 23mm F 5.6 lens. This provides a 14mm full-frame equivalent. The camera is certainly compact, but the lens and the back are the key components that make it very expensive. The camera body is not available without the back, which is a strange limitation.

Technical Specifications

The sensor size of the Phase One XC matches closely to 645 film, making it quite unique in the medium format world. It houses a very advanced carbon fiber leaf shutter and also has a touchscreen interface which is used for controls. The camera does not shoot video, but the live view functionality is very efficient and has a great raw histogram for exposure adjustments.

The camera is not designed for fast shooting, but can be used for travel and street photography due to its portability. The raw histogram feature ensures that highlights and shadow details are protected, making it a great tool for capturing high dynamic range images. The manual focus ring is smooth, but a little stiff. The startup time is not particularly fast, making it more suitable for slow, deliberate shooting.

The Phase One XC is a unique and fascinating camera, but its price and limited availability make it a niche product for only very specific purposes. Its compact, portable design and unique features make it a valuable tool for capturing high-resolution images, but its limitations on interchangeable lenses and slow shooting speed are worth considering for potential buyers.
