The Easiest Way to Sort Your Lightroom Photos

Introduction

In this video, I want to talk all about my Lightroom catalog and how I organize it. In my recent exhibition, I had a fantastic experience meeting all my viewers in person and realizing the impact I’ve had on people’s photography. I just wanted to share that before we dive into Lightroom catalog organization.

Organizing by Year and Quarters

Since 2002, I’ve been using a single Lightroom catalog to house around 275,000 photos. I structure my catalog by organizing photos by year and quarters. Each year has folders for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. For bigger trips, I may further categorize by days. This setup allows me to easily locate photos from specific time periods.

Importing and Stacking Photos

Once I have my structure in place, I import my photos into Lightroom. I then stack my HDR images for easy reference. This makes it easier for me to go through my images and choose the best ones.

Choosing and Editing Photos

Using key shortcuts, I go through my images and pick the ones I think are worth editing. I also use the star rating system to further categorize which photos are worth editing and potentially making it into my portfolio or a YouTube video.

Using Smart Catalogs and Projects

Catalogs play a huge role in how I organize my images, especially for projects and YouTube content. I use smart catalogs to categorize and filter my images based on specific criteria, making it easier for me to work on particular projects.

I hope this gives you a good insight into how you can effectively sort your Lightroom photos. Organizing by year and quarters, stacking and rating photos, and using smart catalogs are the easiest ways to keep your Lightroom catalog structured and easily accessible.

Conclusion

Thank you for watching and I hope this has been helpful in giving you some ideas on how to sort your Lightroom photos. Let me know in the comments if you have any other tips or tricks for organizing your photos in Lightroom.
