The Best Wide Angle Lens I’ve Ever Used | Sigma 14mm f1.4 Long Term Review
Yeah this camera lens is something special. Thank you to Ship Station for sponsoring today’s video.
Introduction
In my opinion, when it comes to mirrorless cameras and photography, the technology has not really advanced at all in the last seven or eight years. However, Sigma has shaken things up with their 14mm F1.4 Ultra wide lens. As soon as Sigma announced this lens, I knew I wanted to try it. Over the last month, I have used this lens in various situations, and today, I am going to share my experience and all the photos with you. Please note that this is not a technical review; instead, I aim to test the lens’s capabilities in creating beautiful art.
Street Photography Test
I started by testing the general quality of this lens in a street photography setting. With plenty of light, I stopped up the lens to around F4 or F2.8, and the image quality was exactly what I expected from a lens of this caliber. The images were crisp, clean, and rendered colors nicely. There was very little distortion, making this a true 14mm lens. I was extremely satisfied with the image quality.
Wide Open Test
I wanted to see if this level of image quality was achievable when shooting wide open at F1.4. To test this, I went to the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta, which is an excellent testing ground for ultra-wide lenses. The images shot at F1.4 were incredible. The perspective and wide aperture allowed me to capture stunning shots with low ISO and beautiful bokeh.
Portrait Test
I conducted two portrait shoots to assess the lens’s performance in capturing sharp and vibrant portraits. The results were impressive, with the lens rendering colors beautifully and producing unique-looking portraits. However, it is crucial to note that shooting at 14mm will result in some distortion in the subject’s body. This can be compensated for by adjusting the composition.
Low Light Test
We conducted an underground photo shoot using external light sources to push the lens’s capabilities in low light conditions. The images turned out sharp and clean, but we did experience some autofocus issues. It’s worth mentioning that this lens may require some additional effort to achieve the best results in challenging lighting situations.
Nature and Landscape Photography
Most people who purchase this lens will likely use it for nature, landscape, or astrophotography. I conducted a quick test in harsh conditions, taking the lens out in the rain. While the results were okay, it was challenging to keep the large front element clean. The moisture caused smudging on the lens, impacting image quality. However, in some cases, the haze from the rain added to the ambiance of the image.
In conclusion, the Sigma 14mm F1.4 lens is undoubtedly one of the best wide-angle lenses I have ever used. Its image quality, even wide open at F1.4, is exceptional. However, it requires some effort to master in certain shooting conditions. If you’re a photographer looking to elevate your creativity and capture breathtaking wide-angle shots, this lens is definitely worth considering.
