Introduction

Hey guys, welcome to PHLEARN! My name is Aaron Nace, and you can find me on phlearn.com where we make learning fun. Today, we’re comparing all of the top programs out there for reducing noise in your images. Our main goal for this video is to find the best noise reduction software out there. There are a lot of new programs saying, “Hey, we’ve got artificial intelligence that does a great job of this,” so we’re going to put that all to the test. We’re going to be using Photoshop, Topaz Labs, DxO, Luminar, and an online tool that I think does a great job as well.

Using Photoshop for Noise Reduction

Being that this is mainly a Photoshop channel, that’s where we’re going to start. So here’s our sample image, which you guys can download as well. The first thing we’re going to do is convert it to a smart object because we’re going to be running a filter on this. We’re going to go to Filter, then down to Noise, and Reduce Noise. We have different options in Photoshop. I can change the strength of my noise reduction, but as I increase the strength, I notice that it blurs the pixels together, resulting in loss of information. In my opinion, keeping all the settings at zero, excluding the remove JPEG artifact option, tends to work best for Photoshop. Let’s apply the noise reduction and take a look at the before and after.

Using Lightroom for Noise Reduction

Next, let’s explore noise reduction in Lightroom. Assuming most of you have the Adobe Creative Cloud, let’s see what Lightroom Classic can do. In the Develop module, under Detail, we’ll find the Noise Reduction settings. By adjusting the Luminance slider to the right, we can significantly reduce noise. Additional control can be achieved by manipulating the Detail and Contrast sliders. Lightroom offers a decent amount of control for noise reduction, so let’s compare the before and after.

Using Luminar AI for Noise Reduction

Luminar AI, known for its artificial intelligence features, also provides noise reduction capabilities. However, its denoise feature does not have AI built-in. In Luminar’s standalone program, we have options for luminosity denoise and color denoise. By adjusting these sliders, we can reduce noise in the image. While Luminar AI does a pretty good job of preserving detail, it does leave some noise around subjects such as hair. We’ll export the image and compare it with the rest in Photoshop.

Using Topaz Labs AI for Noise Reduction

Our next tool is Topaz Labs Denoise AI, specifically designed for artificial intelligence noise removal. With different AI noise reduction models, Topaz Labs offers a range of options for reducing noise. Each model applies a different level of noise reduction. By pushing the noise reduction settings to the extreme, we can observe the program’s capabilities. Topaz Labs AI seems to add detail and texture to the image, enhancing contrast and even reconstructing certain elements. However, there is still room for improvement.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we’ve compared various noise reduction software including Photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar AI, and Topaz Labs Denoise AI. While each program has its strengths, it’s important to note that noise reduction is a delicate balance between reducing noise and preserving detail. After exporting the images and conducting a side-by-side comparison, we can determine which software produces the best results.

Remember, finding the best noise reduction software ultimately depends on your personal preference and the specific requirements of your images. So, go ahead and try out these programs for yourself to find the one that suits you best.

Frequently Asked Questions about The Best Noise Reduction Software in 2021 | PHLEARN

What is noise reduction software?

Noise reduction software is a tool designed to reduce or eliminate digital noise in images. It helps to improve the overall quality and clarity of photographs by reducing the unwanted grainy or pixelated appearance caused by high ISO settings, underexposure, or other factors.

Why is noise reduction important?

Noise reduction is crucial in photography because excessive noise can considerably degrade the visual appeal and sharpness of an image. By using noise reduction software, photographers can enhance the quality of their photos, making them more visually appealing and professional-looking.

What are the key features to consider when choosing noise reduction software?

When selecting noise reduction software, it is essential to consider certain features:

  • Effectiveness: Assess how well the software reduces noise while preserving image details and sharpness.
  • Compatibility: Ensure the software is compatible with your operating system and photography editing software.
  • User-Friendliness: Look for software with an intuitive interface and easy-to-use tools.
  • Customization: Check if the software allows for customizing noise reduction settings to fit your specific needs.
  • Speed: Consider the processing speed of the software, especially when working with large batches of images.

Which noise reduction software is the best in 2021?

The best noise reduction software in 2021 varies depending on individual needs and preferences. However, popular options include Adobe Lightroom, DxO PhotoLab, Topaz Denoise AI, and Capture One Pro. It is recommended to try out different software and choose the one that works best for your specific requirements.

Is noise reduction software only used by professional photographers?

No, noise reduction software can be beneficial for photographers of all levels, from amateur enthusiasts to professional photographers. It helps improve image quality, reduce distractions, and enhance the overall visual impact of photographs.

Can noise reduction software completely eliminate noise?

Noise reduction software aims to minimize the noise in an image, but it may not completely eliminate it, especially in extreme cases. The effectiveness of noise reduction depends on various factors, including the software being used, the quality of the original image, and the extent of noise present.

Are there any free noise reduction software options available?

Yes, there are free noise reduction software options available, such as GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), Darktable, and NoiseWare Community Edition. While these free software options might not have all the advanced features of paid software, they can still deliver satisfactory noise reduction results for basic photo editing needs.
