Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 G2 Review & Comparison

Today we’ve got your full in-depth review of the Tamron 70 to 180 F 2.8 G2. This is the second version of this fantastic lens from Tamron and I’m happy to say that it’s been upgraded in just about every single way. In this article, we’re going to be breaking it down to figure out whether it’s going to be a good fit for you or not, covering everything that’s relevant and also comparing it to a few other lenses in the category like the Sony 70-200 G Master Mark II and of course the original as well. So let’s dive in!

Performance

Here are some of my favorite photo examples from my time with this lens so far and as you can see it is quite a great performer. It’s sharp where it needs to be, the autofocus is fantastic, and being a fast f 2.8, it’s going to give you beautiful out-of-focus backgrounds. It’s great in low light and is a versatile lens for sports, wildlife, and landscapes.

Autofocus and Manual Focus

Utilizing Tamron’s newer VXD focusing motors, the autofocus of this lens is very impressive. Its tracking has been improved over the original version and it’s very quick and reliable. When it comes to the manual focus experience, it feels more accurate and intuitive compared to the original. You can also customize the focus hold button and three custom dials using their app for manual focus adjustments.

Image Stabilization and Minimum Focus Distance

This lens is now image stabilized, which was a big critique of the original. The vibration compensation feature performs extraordinarily well. The minimum focus distance has also been drastically improved from the original, allowing you to get extraordinarily close to your subject.

Sharpness Comparison

This lens is very sharp and performs extraordinarily well. Even at 180mm wide open at F 2.8, it provides very sharp images with great color and contrast. When compared to its competitors, the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 G2 holds its own, delivering impressive sharpness across the frame.

Conclusion

The Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is a fantastic upgrade from the original, delivering improved performance, image stabilization, and minimum focus distance. Its sharpness and autofocus capabilities make it a great choice for sports, wildlife, and portrait photography. When compared to its competitors, it holds its own and is a strong contender in its category. Overall, this lens is a versatile and high-quality option for photographers looking for a fast telephoto lens.
