Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 VC VXD Fuji X-mount Review | Affordable Reach?

Introduction

Foreign Abbott and I’m here today to give you my video review of the Tamron 150 to 500 millimeter lens. This lens, with an aperture range of F5 to F6.7, is designed for mirrorless cameras and features image stabilization and a VXD linear focus motor. While this lens was initially released for Sony full-frame e-mount cameras, it has now been ported over to the Fuji X-mount system.

Build and Design

The Tamron 150-500mm lens is not compact by any means, but it fits well on the Fuji X-mount system. It measures 93mm in diameter and has an 82mm front filter thread. The lens is 210mm in length, making it slightly smaller than Fuji’s 150-600mm lens. However, despite its relatively compact size, it is heavier due to its full-frame design. The lens weighs about 1.7kg or 3.75 pounds.

Performance and Features

The Tamron 150-500mm lens offers a useful range from 150 to 500mm, which is equivalent to 225-750mm on a Fuji APS-C camera. This lens also provides a higher level of magnification compared to Fuji’s offerings, with a maximum magnification of 0.32x. The zoom action on this lens is smooth and the lens is well-built with 11 internal seal points and a fluorine coating on the front element. Additionally, the lens comes with a removable tripod collar that is ARCA Swiss compatible.

Comparison to Fuji Lenses

While the Tamron 150-500mm lens lacks some features found in Fuji lenses, such as an aperture ring and custom buttons, it offers its unique advantages. One standout feature is the clutch lock mechanism, which allows you to lock the lens at any focal length. This feature is absent in the Fuji lenses. However, controlling the aperture will need to be done through the camera’s settings.

Conclusion

The Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 VC VXD Fuji X-mount lens is a welcome addition to the X-mount system. Despite being a full-frame lens ported over to an APS-C specific mount, it offers excellent performance and reach at an affordable price point. With its sturdy build, smooth zoom action, and useful features like the clutch lock mechanism, it is a viable option for photographers looking for a versatile telephoto lens.

Overall, the Tamron 150-500mm lens provides photographers with an affordable reach and exceptional image quality. With its compatibility on the Fuji X-mount system, it opens up new possibilities for wildlife, sports, and astrophotography. Whether you’re a professional or an enthusiast, this lens is worth considering if you’re looking to expand your telephoto capabilities.
