Step Up Your STOP MOTION Game
If you watched our video last Thursday about the new DGI Mavic 2 Pro, you may have noticed our stop motion unboxing we did. Today we’re gonna show you a few tricks so you can pull off a similar effect quickly and relatively easily.
Setting Up the Camera
In a bird’s eye perspective, the camera is set up. This perspective provides a unique angle that adds depth and interest to the stop motion video. The blinds are closed to ensure consistent lighting throughout the shooting process. To enhance the lighting, an aperture triad c light is placed on the top right side, while an LED pixelstick is positioned on the left side.
Recordings are made with incremental adjustments to the scene, ensuring that limbs are removed for a brief moment in each shot. This technique adds a seamless flow to the overall stop motion animation.
Editing in Premiere
Once the filming is complete, the footage is imported into Adobe Premiere for further editing. To streamline the editing workflow, it is recommended to set up keyboard shortcuts. Shortcuts for functions such as ripple trim previous edit to playhead, add edit, go to previous edit point, and go to next edit point are beneficial for quick and efficient editing.
To add a frame hold, a shortcut is assigned by typing the command in the designated column and then pressing the desired key. With the shortcuts configured, a new sequence is created by dragging the footage to the new item icon.
Playing through the footage, the editor locates the first shot and uses the Q key to mark it. Then, by pressing the right arrow key twice, the editor jumps forward two frames. The C key is used to make a cut, and the up arrow key is pressed to return to the start of the shot.
To create a frame hold, the Y key is pressed, resulting in a freeze frame for the designated two frames. The length of each shot can be adjusted to alter the fluidity and style of the stop motion animation. Longer shots create a choppier effect, while shorter shots provide a smoother motion.
Efficient Workflow
After getting into a rhythm, the stop motion process can be expedited. Working systematically, a considerable number of shots can be processed in a shorter period of time. For example, in the case of the Mavic stop motion, 215 different shots were executed, showcasing the advantage of an efficient workflow for longer stop motion scenes.
Adding Sound Effects
Enhancing the stop motion experience, the inclusion of sound effects brings the animation to life. Sound effect libraries are available for purchase, or alternatively, freesound.org offers a free option for sound effects.
