Sony G 24-50mm f2.8 Review and Comparisons

Hey everyone! Today, I have the new Sony 24 to 50 mm f2.8 G lens, and we’re going to be taking a hands-on look at its performance for both photo and video. Just like all my reviews, I have heaps of real-world examples to share with you. So, let’s get started.

Performance at a Portrait Photo Shoot

Starting off with some close-up shots, the 24 to 50 mm f2.8 G is a full-frame standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount. We’re going to dive into testing out the performance of this lens at a portrait photo shoot with our amazing Team Yasmin Lydia and Dan.

Build and Features

This lens is super small and lightweight at 440g and around 92mm in length. It features external zoom, a focus ring, a zoom ring, an aperture ring, as well as an aperture click switch. It also has one focus hold button, an AF to MF switch, is moisture-resistant, and has a 67mm filter thread.

Image Quality

The photos from this little zoom lens are impressive, coming from a mid-price point of $1199 US or $1199 AUD. The autofocus and sharpness are consistent at all focal ranges, and it offers a flattering level of sharpness for portraits.

Distortion and Chromatic Aberration

There’s quite a bit of distortion on the wide end, and dark vignetting at the very corners of the frame at 24mm. However, the lens handles chromatic aberration excellently. The background to foreground separation is also quite nice, especially at the 35 to 50mm range.

Who Should Consider This Lens?

The Sony 24 to 50mm f2.8 G lens could be a good purchase option for those who can’t afford or don’t need the performance of the higher-end Sony lenses like the 24 to 70 f2.8 GM. It performs well in scenarios such as portraits, street photography, weddings, and travel. However, it’s important to note that you are missing out on around 20mm of zoom on the long end of the lens.

Overall, the Sony 24 to 50mm f2.8 G lens is a reliable and versatile option for a variety of shooting scenarios. While it may have some limitations compared to higher-end Sony lenses, it offers excellent performance for its price point.
