Sony FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 Kit Lens + Sony A7III Portrait Photoshoot

Hey everyone, for today’s photo shoot behind the scenes video, a portrait session was done using the Sony FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens on the Sony A7III camera. The model for this shoot is Kareena, with Lydia handling the hair and makeup, and Dan filming behind the scenes.

The purpose of this photo shoot was to showcase the potential of a kit lens and demonstrate that one does not need to wait or have better gear to capture beautiful photos. Even a kit lens or a toy camera, like the ones used in previous shoots with Kristina, or even a smartphone, can produce stunning results.

Creative Shots with the Kit Lens

In this shoot, the goal was to experiment with different locations and lighting situations to create unique and creative shots. The lens has the capability to zoom, providing versatility during the shoot.

By taking advantage of the limited depth of field offered by kit lenses, the photographer selected locations with interesting textures and details in the background. This helped to enhance the overall composition of the images.

Close-up Portraits

Throughout the shoot, it was discovered that the kit lens excels at capturing close-ups, particularly when zoomed to the 70mm end. The lens produced incredibly detailed and textured images, showcasing the model’s features beautifully.

To further maximize the quality of the photos, the photographer worked with natural light instead of shooting backlit, as is typically done. While backlit portraits can be stunning, a kit lens shines when working with direct light hitting the model’s face, highlighting their features.

Outdoor Shots and Editing

The shoot continued with a variety of outdoor shots, making use of the dynamic range of the Sony A7III camera to bring out the shadows in shaded areas. The photographer also adjusted the ISO settings to achieve higher shutter speeds, ensuring sharpness and avoiding motion blur.

All the photos were edited using the photographer’s mountain-themed Lightroom preset package. This preset was inspired by the mountains preset in her free digital film app, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the images.

Playing with Bokeh

As the shoot progressed, the goal was to capture some bokeh shots. While the location was not ideal for bokeh, the photographer managed to find a tree to work with. In the first shot, the model was too close to the background, resulting in minimal bokeh. However, by instructing the model to move away from the background in the second shot, the photographer was able to create some beautiful bokeh using the leaves.

Overall, this behind-the-scenes photo shoot using the Sony FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens on the Sony A7III camera demonstrated the potential of a kit lens in capturing stunning portrait photos. It proved that one can achieve remarkable results with the gear they already have, without needing to wait or invest in additional equipment.

If you have any thoughts or feedback on the photos, locations, or shots from this shoot, the photographer would love to hear from you in the comments. Additionally, she would like to know if you also shoot with a kit lens for portrait sessions or any other type of photography. Your input is always valued.

Thank you for watching, and be sure to tune in for more videos every Wednesday!
