Candidly, I know it’s the time of year to do so, but I have no interest in summarizing a year’s worth of our videos, “Three Blind Men and an Elephant,” into a single best-of video. With so many products, categories, industry awards, and best-of YouTube videos already out there, it would be a waste of your time to go through this exercise. However, there is one combination of products that stands out and deserves recognition. I’m talking about Sony’s a7 IV and Tamron’s 28-75 2.8. It stands head and shoulders above everything else as a representative of the current state of the art in the mirrorless hybrid space, which is the hottest segment in the photo-video industry.
Taken separately, each of these products is capable of standing on its own. Sony’s a7 IV is a 33-megapixel blend of the a1 and a7 III, at a fraction of the price. Tamron’s 28-75 2.8 G2 is the sharpest, best-corrected, best auto-focusing, lightest, smallest, and weather-sealed new standard zoom of the year. But when you put them together, you have the most capable, flexible, and best-value one-lens hybrid kit we have ever seen.
This combination showcases Sony’s real-world industry leadership and Tamron’s ascension to the first tier of independent lens manufacturing. Of course, there are flaws and room for improvement. The a7 IV has some limitations like cropped 4K 60p and a menu system that could use improvements. The Tamron lens also has distortion issues, but they are easily correctable.
Despite these limitations, the performance, size, weight, features, and price of this combination make it incredibly compelling. It outperforms the competition, even lenses like Sigma’s 24-72.8 DG DN and Nikon’s own 28-75 2.8. We have already bought the Tamron lens and pre-ordered the Sony a7 IV to replace our current gear.
