Introduction

So there was one lens you could leave on your Sony aps-c camera, what would it be? Would it be just this basic kit lens? I don’t know, we’ll soon find out. What’s up, my friends, my name is Jason Morris and today we’re going to talk about the Sony 18-105mm f/4 OSS. Will this lens be the lens you’ll always have attached to your aps-c camera? Also, does it work on your full-frame camera? We’ll show you some sample images of what it looks like attached to my a7III and also test its sharpness, image quality, and vignetting on the aps-c camera. Let’s get into the review!

Strap Shout Out

Just a quick shout out to Lucky Scraps, a Victorian brand here in Australia. I got a nice custom strap from them, as you can see here. It is made of quality materials and looks great. I am not sponsored or affiliated with this brand, but I believe they produce some pretty quality products. Check them out in the link in the description below and see what you think.

Size and Handling

If you can handle the size of this lens, it will make for better-looking photos than the Zeiss lens. Yes, I said it. This lens is handy, but slightly on the big side. One may ask if it makes sense to carry around this lens because it’s big and heavy, and the whole point of a mirrorless camera is its smaller size. With this lens, you lose some of the advantages of having a mirrorless camera. However, the 16-250mm lens is much smaller but not as good and lacks the focal range. It has an electronic manual focus ring that can be activated in the camera’s menu system, allowing for manual focus. But what makes this lens exciting is how fast it focuses and its extremely useful focal range. It’s more than enough lens to bring on any kind of travel or walk-around trip. The focal range of 18-105mm is excellent, and it’s perfect for fast video focusing. Let’s take a look at some sample videos now.

Video Test

Here we are at 18mm at f/4, and you can see it stays in focus throughout. It tracks quite nicely. This is paired up with the a6000, popping in and out of frame. It’s really fast focusing. Now let’s go to 250mm and test if we can track backward. It does a very good job of tracking. The focus is fast, even at f/4. It performs well at different focal lengths and is great for video work. The built-in stabilizer also makes it perfect for handheld shots in low light and works well with gimbals, as it doesn’t extend beyond the standard size of the lens.

Image Quality

Now let’s take a quick peek at the image quality of this lens. At 18mm and f/4, you can see there’s a lot of barrel distortion and vignetting. Clicking on the profile corrections, you can see the vignette is reduced in the center. The lens is sharp in the center but softer at the sides. Stopping down to f/5.6, it gets sharper in the center and the contrast improves. At f/8, it seems to have reached its peak sharpness in the center, with only a slight improvement on the sides. Similar results can be seen at 50mm and 105mm, with variations in distortion and sharpness. Overall, the lens performs well, especially in the center.

Using APS-C Lens on Full Frame Camera

Some people want to know if you can use this lens on a full-frame camera. Yes, you can use almost any APS-C Sony lens on your full-frame camera, but the performance may not be optimal. Due to the smaller form factor of APS-C lenses, you will experience heavy vignetting. Here’s some footage to show you exactly what I mean. At 18mm and f/4 on my a7III full-frame camera, you can see heavy vignetting. Zooming in to 50mm and 105mm, the vignetting is still present in the corners. However, in full-frame crop mode on the a7III, you can achieve some nice results with background blur and bokeh.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Sony 18-105mm f/4 OSS lens is a versatile lens with a handy focal range. It focuses fast, works well with video, and has a built-in stabilizer. The image quality is good, especially in the center, but there may be some distortion and softness at the edges. When using this lens on a full-frame camera, expect heavy vignetting due to its design for APS-C cameras. Overall, it’s a reliable lens for everyday use, travel, and video work.
