Sony 18-105 F4 Review – If You Could Only Have ONE Lens…

If you could only have one lens for your Sony camera, what lens would it be? Today, we are talking about my go-to all-around lens for the Sony a6500, a6300, a6000, or any Sony E-mount camera. While I believe in building out your kit with different lenses for different purposes, it got me thinking – if I could only bring one camera and one lens while traveling, what lens would I choose? That lens is the Sony 18-105 F4 G OSS lens. I have owned this lens for over a year now and it stays on my camera more than any other lens I own. Let’s dive into the good, the not-so-good, and what you can do about it.

The Focal Length

The 18-105 focal length of this lens makes it extremely versatile. It provides a full-frame equivalent of 27-152mm, giving you a wide range of options. On the wider end, it is great for landscape and architecture photography. In the mid-range, around 50-85mm, you can capture beautiful portraits. And on the longer end, it is perfect for events and situations where you need to keep some distance from your subject.

Zoom Lens vs. Primes

When it comes to choosing between a zoom lens and a set of prime lenses, it depends on your needs and preferences. Primes usually offer better image quality, but zooms are far more versatile. If I had to choose one, I would go with the zoom lens, as long as it delivers the same image quality as my prime lenses.

Build Quality

The Sony 18-105 F4 lens is primarily made of metal, giving it a solid and durable feel. It features separate zoom and focus rings, making it easy to use. The size of the lens is almost the same as a soda can, making it compact and convenient to carry. One standout feature is the internal zooming mechanism, which means the lens doesn’t extend when zooming. This makes it ideal for gimbals and stabilizers, as there’s no need to rebalance when changing the focal length.

Constant Aperture

Unlike many zoom lenses, the Sony 18-105 F4 lens has a constant aperture of f/4 throughout the entire zoom range. While f/4 may not offer the same low-light capabilities or shallow depth of field as some other lenses, it still lets in a significant amount of light. This constant aperture is especially beneficial for video work, as you can zoom during a shot without changing the aperture and affecting your exposure or depth of field. Thanks to the advancements in sensor technology, the lens performs well in most situations with minimal noise when increasing the ISO.

The Sony 18-105 F4 lens is my go-to all-around lens for my Sony E-mount cameras. Its versatility, constant aperture, and reliable build quality make it a great choice for various photography and videography needs. While it may not excel in low-light or provide the shallowest depth of field, it offers a wide range of focal lengths and delivers excellent image quality. If you could only have one lens, the Sony 18-105 F4 lens would be a solid choice.
