Sirui Sniper AF 23mm F1.2 Lens Review

Hi, I’m Dustin Abbott and recently I came to you with an overview video of the new Sirui Sniper series of autofocusing lenses for APS-C cameras. There’s a 23mm, 33mm, and 56mm, all with a maximum aperture of f1.2, and they all come in Fuji X Mount, which I’m reviewing here. Sony E-mount and the Nikon Z Mount. So I’ve taken a look at the series as a whole, but obviously, there are individual characteristics of each one of these lenses that warrant a closer look at them individually. Today, I will review the Sirui Sniper 23mm f1.2 Lens.

Build and Handling

This lens retails for $349 MSRP but it can be had cheaper through a variety of means. This is a really nicely built lens that uses premium and unique materials. It has average autofocus for stills and below-average autofocus for video. It has very nice bouquet and sharpens up when stopped down but has some chromatic aberration and lower contrast euphemistically called “dreamy” when wide open at larger apertures. The overall design of the lens is fresh and different from other lenses out there and is quite unique.

Dimensions and Features

In terms of dimensions, the lens is 72mm in diameter and a little over 92mm in length. It weighs in at 380g, which is a little bit larger and heavier than most of the competing lenses. There are also three different finish options available for the lens, including black, silver, and white with unique and premium materials and textures. The lens comes with a petal-shaped lens hood made out of plastic and has 11 rounded aperture blades that help with creating a circular shape to the aperture, giving a nice bouquet quality.

Autofocus and Video Performance

The autofocus is driven by an STM focus motor, and the focus speed is about average. The focus noise is very low, and the autofocus accuracy for stills is generally quite good. However, when it comes to video, the autofocus performance is not as good, with noticeable hunting and settling. The lens takes time to make up its mind, and it’s not as reactive as some competing lenses, resulting in lag and lack of confidence in video autofocus performance.

While the Sirui Sniper AF 23mm F1.2 Lens has a unique and stylish design with premium materials, it falls short in terms of video autofocus performance. It’s a good option for still photography, especially when stopped down for improved sharpness and reduced chromatic aberration. However, for video enthusiasts, there may be better options available in the market. Overall, it’s a lens that offers a unique blend of features but with some trade-offs that users should consider before making a purchase.
