SIGMA 56MM 1.4 REVIEW // The BEST Portrait Lens for Sony E & MFT?!

Introduction

Greetings, everyone! Dunna here, and today we have the pleasure of completing the trilogy of Sigma lens reviews for the contemporary series with the remarkable Sigma 56mm f1.4. This lens is the third in the contemporary series, following the impressively sharp 30mm f1.4 and the wonderfully wide 16mm f1.4. If you want to watch my reviews for either of those lenses, I’ll leave links in the description. Let’s dive into this lens and see if it lives up to the hype!

Build and Design

Right off the bat, I was blown away by how compact and lightweight this lens is. It’s about half the size of the 16mm from the same line and roughly the same size as the Sony 50mm f1.8. Despite its small footprint, the lens has a good weight to it and feels well-built. The focus ring is incredibly smooth with a nice resistance. It also has weather sealing, claiming to be dust and splash proof. Its size and weight pair nicely with Sony APS-C cameras, making it easy to carry around.

Image Quality

Sigma boasts that this lens has image quality to rival their art series line, and it doesn’t disappoint. The image quality is fantastic, with colors and contrast that remind me of the more expensive art line. It’s definitely got that Sigma look to it. In comparison to the 30mm f1.4, which is DxO marks sharpest APS-C Sony E-mount lens, the 56mm is slightly sharper. Even wide open at 1.4, it is tack sharp in the middle, and stopping down to F2 or F2.8 gives you a sharp image all the way through. There is a small amount of color fringing, but it’s easily fixable in post-processing.

Autofocus Performance

Sigma has nailed the autofocus performance on Sony bodies. The lens focuses really well using the autofocus features of Sony cameras. For photography, the autofocus speed is great, with minimal hunting even in challenging low-light situations. The eye autofocus feature works like a charm for portraits. In video mode, the autofocus is smooth and accurate and works seamlessly with the camera’s settings. It’s on par with the autofocus performance of Sony lenses.

Focal Length and Aperture

At first, 56mm might seem like an odd focal length, but when you take into account the 1.5x crop on the Sony version, it becomes an 84mm equivalent lens. This is right in the wheelhouse of the popular 85mm length loved by portrait photographers. The super fast F1.4 aperture allows for beautiful and smooth bokeh in the background. This lens is clearly designed with portrait shooters in mind and is a great option for those who value bokeh. It’s also suitable for close-up b-roll and product photography, although it’s not ideal for macro shots.

Conclusion

The Sigma 56mm f1.4 is a fantastic lens, offering impressive image quality and smooth autofocus performance. Its compact size and lightweight make it a perfect match for Sony APS-C cameras. While it excels at portrait photography, it may not be an all-around lens due to its tight field of view. For video shooters, handheld shots may require extra stability due to the lack of image stabilization. Overall, this lens is a great investment for portrait photographers looking to capture stunning images with beautiful bokeh.
