Are you debating whether to make the switch to a full frame camera in 2018? With the advancements in technology and the growing popularity of mirrorless cameras, the decision can be a tough one. In this blog, we will compare two popular options on the market, the Sony A7II and the A6500, to help you make an informed decision. Whether you’re a professional photographer looking for ultimate image quality or an enthusiast looking to upgrade, we will break down the key differences between these two cameras to help you determine if it’s time to go full frame in 2018.

Should you go FULL FRAME in 2018? Sony A7II vs A6500 comparison

Hey everyone, Manny Ortiz is here to discuss whether you should opt for the A6500 or the Sony A7II in 2018. Which one should you choose – APS-C or full-frame? Fortunately, the A7II is currently available at B&H Photo for $600 off, making it $1,000 brand-new with a kit lens. If you’ve been contemplating a transition to full-frame, this is the video for you.

Sony A6500

The A6500 is Manny’s main camera for video, utilized for filming this very video. He loves this camera and recommends it for photo and video enthusiasts or hybrid shooters who enjoy both mediums. The pros of this camera include exceptional photo and video quality, superb video autofocus performance, lightweight and compact design, and in-body image stabilization. However, the ergonomics leave something to be desired, as the camera is small and lacks ample buttons, making it slightly inconvenient for photography. Additionally, the lens selection for the A6500 isn’t as extensive as some may prefer.

Sony A7II

For those more inclined toward pure photography, Manny believes the A7II would be the best choice. The full-frame sensor offers benefits such as shallower depth of field, improved low-light performance, and in-body image stabilization, serving as an excellent starting point for those transitioning to full-frame. However, the A7II lacks the advanced autofocus features present in some newer models, with autofocus performance being less effective in low-light conditions.

One downside to note is the camera’s reliance on smaller batteries, necessitating the purchase of additional batteries for extended use. Despite potential shortcomings, the A7II provides entry into the Sony full-frame ecosystem at an affordable price point, albeit with the understanding that full-frame lenses can be costly.

If you are considering a move to full-frame photography, the current offer of $1,000 for the Sony A7II with a kit lens presents a compelling opportunity. While lens prices may be a consideration, diving into the full-frame realm can unlock new creative possibilities. Keep an eye out for Manny’s upcoming video featuring the F 0.95 lens for high-speed shooting outdoors, set to be released soon.
