Welcome to Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses II Review

Welcome back petapixel viewers, it is Chris Nichols here. Join us today for one of our special episodes that we like to call technicals with Chris Nichols. What tech are we looking at today? Well, look at this, we have the brand new Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses version two. Let’s dive right in!

Features and Design

We never got a chance to play with the first version of these, but apparently they left a lot to be desired. Now we’ve got the second version and what these are doing is combining a lot of different equipment into one unit. These are not augmented reality glasses in any way, nothing is coming up on the display, but they do cover a lot of your needs.

The glasses come with a video camera and stills camera, headphones, and five microphones that record spatial audio and make calls very clear. The glasses also come in various styles, with the option for transition lenses for varying light conditions.

The new Ray-Ban glasses come with a very familiar Ray-Ban case, which doubles as a charging case. It has a USBC port on the bottom and a built-in battery, providing 5 to 6 hours of battery life for regular use. The glasses charge quickly in about an hour and come with simple controls for taking photos, videos, and making calls.

Camera and Video Quality

Let’s talk about the camera that’s in here. The camera module on the left side provides 12 megapixel stills and 1080p 30 fps video recording. The photo quality is better than the original version, but still not on par with the latest smartphone cameras. There are some quirks with the camera, including a slight angle discrepancy and limited recording time for videos, which may require some getting used to.

The camera only records in a vertical format, which may be limiting for certain use cases. Additionally, any head movements may affect photo and video composition, so users need to be mindful of this when capturing content.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses II offer a combination of features and style, making it a versatile accessory for daily use. While there are some quirks and limitations with the camera and video recording, the glasses provide a convenient way to capture moments and stay connected. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or simply looking for a stylish camera for your face, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses II are worth considering.
