POV Drone Photography with the DJI Mavic Mini 2
I’m currently in Sydney, which is known for its iconic landmarks like the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. But one of the things that makes Sydney even more special is its abundance of stunning oceanside pools. In this article, I’ll be taking you along on a journey to photograph some of Sydney’s best ocean pools using the DJI Mavic Mini 2 drone.
A Multiple-Day Adventure
Unlike typical day-long photography excursions, this project will span across multiple days for a specific reason, which I’ll explain shortly. As I prepare for an early sunrise shoot, I start by packing my equipment. I have my big rolling bag with all my gear and my smaller bag, which will house my DJI Mavic Mini 2 drone.
Capturing the Perfect Shots
The weather is perfect for a sunrise shoot, and I’m excited to launch my drone and begin capturing some breathtaking aerial footage. The first pool we visit is located below a cliff face, providing a perfect spot to deploy the drone. This vantage point offers a sense of tranquility and avoids the crowds often found on the beach. I’ll provide the exact location on a map for those interested.
When shooting seascapes or ocean scenes, the best time to capture vivid colors in the water is when the sun shines directly on it, typically during mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Currently, the sun is hidden behind clouds on the horizon, resulting in somewhat dull lighting. However, I anticipate the scene will improve once the sun emerges and casts its direct light on the pool.
As the sun rises, I decide to fly the drone closer to the rock pool for a unique perspective. My friend, who is piloting another drone, and I coordinate our movements to avoid collisions. While there are many people in the pool today, the low tide prevents water from splashing over the edges, which can create interesting visual frames. To capture a shot of the city and beach in the same frame, I experiment with panning techniques and later stitch the images together.
With the battery running low, I safely land the drone and prepare for the next shoot at Bronte Beach, which is famous for its rock pool. I’m joined by my friend as we continue our adventure.
The Iconic Bondi Beach
Bondi is the most famous and photographed rock pool in Sydney. However, due to composition challenges and surrounding buildings, I opt not to use the drone here. Instead, I rely on my trusty Canon R6 camera and experiment with different lenses to capture unique perspectives. Timing is crucial, and I try to capture a dramatic shot when a wave hits the nearby breakwall. The mid-morning sun casts harsh lighting, so I switch lenses to achieve a desired effect.
Next Stop: Curl Curl and Mona Vale
After wrapping up the first day of shooting, we prepare for the next leg of our adventure: Curl Curl and Mona Vale rock pools. While I have some familiarity with Mona Vale from a previous shoot, the rest is a mystery waiting to unfold. Join me tomorrow morning as we continue exploring Sydney’s breathtaking ocean pools.
Day Two: Mona Vale Beach
I arrive at Mona Vale Beach, only to realize that daylight savings has ended, resulting in the sunrise occurring an hour earlier. Unfortunately, I missed the perfect early morning window with the sun just peaking over the horizon. However, the beautiful morning and clear sky still present an opportunity for stunning photos. The rock pool is easily accessible, located right there on Mona Vale Beach.
I decide to experiment with a panorama shot, capturing the rock pool from different angles and later stitching the photos together. Despite a momentary loss of signal, I continue taking photos and find the scene captivating, especially with surfers adding a dynamic element to the frame.
As the morning progresses, I decide to explore a viewpoint closer to the beach. I find a small rock outcrop that offers a fantastic view of the beach, including the rock pool. I launch the drone from here to capture aerial shots without the need to walk all the way to the pool. The surf looks amazing this morning, and I’m excited to capture the beauty from above.
And thus ends the second day of our adventure, with Monavale leaving a lasting impression and setting the stage for our exploration of other ocean pools in Sydney.
Stay tuned for more stunning drone photography as we continue our journey along Sydney’s beautiful coastline.
