Panasonic Lumix S5 Review – The Best IBIS Ever?

Welcome back to a new video! Today, I have an exciting topic to discuss – the Panasonic Lumix S5, a brand new full-frame mirrorless camera. I’ve had the opportunity to test out this camera in real-world situations, and in this article, I am going to share my honest thoughts and review with you. So let’s dive in!

Impressive Video Capabilities with lumix ibis

The Lumix S5 has some amazing video specs. It can record up to 4K at 60 frames per second in 10-bit color or internally to the SD card. It also offers up to 180 frames per second in full HD. The 4K footage I captured using the camera and the 20 to 60mm lens provided by Panasonic looks stunning. The 10-bit color and dynamic range of the sensor allowed me to recover an exceptional amount of shadow detail in underexposed photos.

Size and Weight

The Lumix S5 is significantly smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the S1, weighing just over 700 grams. Despite its lightweight design, it feels solid and well-built. The camera body and the 20 to 60mm lens are both weather-sealed, making it suitable for various outdoor shooting conditions, including dust and moisture.

Handling and Usability

The camera’s handling and usability are excellent. The grip is comfortable and ergonomic, and the button layout is well thought out. The scroll wheel at the back can be customized to change ISO, and the front and rear dials control shutter speed and aperture, making shooting quick and intuitive. The dedicated white balance button and joystick are also very handy for adjusting settings on the go.

In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS)

The Lumix S5 features a five-axis in-body image stabilization system that offers up to 5 stops of stabilization with non-stabilized lenses. When used with Lumix lenses equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), it can deliver up to 6.5 stops of stabilization. This feature allows for sharp images even when shooting at slower shutter speeds, reducing the need for high ISO settings.

Impressive IBIS for Video

The IBIS in the Lumix S5 performs exceptionally well for video stabilization. It effectively reduces shakes and movements when shooting handheld, resulting in smooth and steady footage. During my hike, I shot all the footage handheld, and the IBIS did an impressive job. Feel free to check out the footage in the comments section below.

Versatile Lens

The 20 to 60mm focal range of the lens provided with the Lumix S5 is really useful. It offers a wider angle of view, making it great for vlogging and capturing more of the background. However, with a variable aperture of f/3.5 to f/5.6, it may not be the best choice for portrait photography or situations requiring shallow depth of field. Nonetheless, Panasonic also sent me a 24 to 70mm f/2.8 lens, which I will review separately.

Conclusion about lumix s5 ibis

The Panasonic Lumix S5 is indeed an impressive camera, particularly if you prioritize video capabilities and in-body image stabilization. The size and weight make it convenient for travel, and the weather-sealing ensures durability in various shooting conditions. The button layout and customization options enhance its usability, and the lens options provide versatility for different shooting scenarios. Overall, I highly recommend the Lumix S5 for both photo and video enthusiasts.
