An Exciting Introduction
Hello all and welcome to beautiful sunny Sri Lanka, well, it’s not really sunny anymore as the sun is going down. But yeah, you get the idea. This is the second time I’ve tried to record this very quick video. The other day, I tried when I was in a really rural area and it didn’t go so well. I was accosted by a group of local youths, seriously, to record videos. Anyway, no possibility of that happening here, I don’t think, because there are mostly western tourists here surfing. They seem to be taking much less interest in what I have to say. It’s fine though, I’m not taking it personally.
A Newcomer on the Scene
The last week or so has been an incredibly exciting time for me, partly because I’m in an incredible country, but also because I’ve been testing a newcomer – the Panasonic Lumix G90. If you’ve been watching my channel for the past two years, you might know that I’ve been vlogging using the Panasonic Lumix G80. Needless to say, the new version has caught my interest.
Features I Love
There are a few things that I’ve absolutely loved about using the G80. The first is that it has a flip-out screen, so you can check if you don’t look too much like an idiot before you press record. The second is that it has incredible stabilization. So when I’m walking along a mountainside or something, and I happen to trip up (as I usually do), the footage is still usable. The third feature I love, which you might love less, is that it has a mic input – which means you can hear my voice. Some of you might not like that, but that’s okay.
The G90: Taking Vlogging to the Next Level
Looking at the spec sheet and using the G90 for the past week, I’ve become very comfortable with the fact that this is most likely going to be my next vlogging camera. It really builds on what the G80 can do. Alongside being able to record in 4K at 30P, the G90 also has a really good slow motion mode. It can shoot at 120 frames per second in 1080p, which is perfect for vlogging b-roll and capturing scenes that don’t look as pretty in normal time. This is a very handy feature.
Exciting New Features
Some other features taken from the G9 that I’m very happy about are namely these three buttons on top of the camera. On the G9, as well as the G90, there’s a dedicated white balance button, which is very important. There’s also a dedicated ISO button and a dedicated exposure button on the top. These do exist in a way on the G80, but they existed on the dial. Now that they’ve been moved to the top, it’s much easier to access. Another great blogging feature that the G90 has is a proper flat profile. When vlogging, high-contrast scenes are common, especially in bright locations like Sri Lanka. Being able to record in a flat profile means you get a much better chance of avoiding blown highlights or losing detail in your shadows.
Enhanced Performance and Convenience
The G90 has a 20-megapixel sensor, which brings it in line with the GH5 and the G9. The G80, on the other hand, only has a 16-megapixel sensor. This isn’t really a problem for me as I was using the G80 as my backup stills camera. However, knowing that the G90 has the same resolution sensor as the G9 gives me peace of mind. Additionally, the G90 has USB charging, allowing for easier charging while traveling. It also has a headphone input, allowing for proper sound monitoring. The addition of Bluetooth connectivity is a big help when making videos on the go.
Final Thoughts
I haven’t had the chance to extensively test the image and footage quality on this camera as it’s a pre-production model. However, based on my experience with the G80 and the early signs from the G90, I believe it will be a fantastic camera. I can’t wait to get my hands on a production model and spend more time experimenting with it. I can already imagine it becoming my primary vlogging camera for the next two years.
In the meantime, I’m going to go and smother myself in after-sun because, as you might be able to tell, I spent too long surfing today and my skin is about to fall off. But once again, thank you for watching, and I’ll see you soon!
