In an attempt to shed light on this issue, we conducted a comprehensive overheating test, pitting two popular contenders against each other: the GoPro Hero 11 and the DJI Osmo Action 3. Overheating Test: GoPro Hero 11 vs. DJI Osmo Action 3 – The Burning Question

The GoPro Hero 11 Black and DJI Osmo Action 3 were both released on the same day, within an hour of each other. I didn’t get much sleep that day because I was determined to test and compare both of these cameras. If a camera overheats, it doesn’t matter how many features it has. So, today, we will be conducting a head-to-head overheating comparison test between these two new cameras. We will also be testing a few other action cameras to see how they perform.

The Cameras

We will be testing the GoPro Hero 10 with an enduro battery, the GoPro Hero 11 with an enduro battery, the DJI Osmo Action 3, the DJI Action 2, and the Insta360 One RS. These are some of the biggest and most popular action cameras available in the market today.

The Test Setup

For this test, we will be running all the cameras at 4k 60 fps. This will create an even playing field as the GoPros have the capability to go up to 5.3k 60 fps, which would give them an unfair advantage. We have a temperature-controlled room set to 75 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure consistent conditions for the test. The cameras will be lifted to allow air flow and a tower fan will be used to create a light breeze, simulating real-world conditions.

The Results

After conducting the tests, we have the average run times for each camera at 4k 60 fps and 4k 120 fps. However, it is important to note that running cameras at these high frame rates for extended periods of time is not how they would typically be used in real-world situations.

The DJI Action 2 was the first to run out of battery, lasting an average of 42 minutes and 12 seconds. The GoPro Hero 10 with an enduro battery lasted 46 minutes and 32 seconds before the battery died. The Insta360 One RS impressed by lasting 1 hour and 7 minutes before the battery died, showing no signs of overheating.

Now, it’s time to reveal the performance of the GoPro Hero 11 and the DJI Osmo Action 3. The GoPro Hero 11 managed to last an impressive average of 1 hour and 9 minutes at 4k 60 fps. It did not overheat, but the battery died before reaching that point. On the other hand, the DJI Osmo Action 3 emerged as the winner, as it did not overheat or run out of battery for the duration of the test.


The DJI Osmo Action 3 stood out as the champion of this overheating test, proving its ability to handle extended use at high frame rates. The GoPro Hero 11 also showed significant improvement compared to its predecessor, lasting longer and not experiencing any overheating issues.

It is important to note that these results were obtained under controlled conditions, and real-world usage may vary. Nonetheless, this test provides valuable insight into the performance of these cameras and helps users make an informed decision when choosing an action camera.
