My Zhiyun Crane Rig – Full Setup Video
Hey, what’s going on guys? It’s been a while since I’ve made a video on this side of the camera. I’ve just been really busy with traveling, shooting, and running my company in general. But I’m really excited to get back into making more videos on this channel for you guys.
One of the most asked questions during my hiatus was about my gimbal setup and exactly what it looks like and how it all works. So today, I’m going to run you guys through my Zhiyun Crane setup. The camera that I’m using on that gimbal is the Fujifilm XT2. This is my main camera and it is recording this video right now. The reason I don’t use my Red Raven camera on the gimbal is that I don’t have a gimbal that has a heavy enough payload rating to take the Red Raven. But for now, I’m really happy with the way that the Zhiyun Crane performs with the XT2, which is an awesome camera. Gimbal Setup
My Zhiyun Crane setup is currently broken down, but I have all the bits and pieces laid out for you guys. I’m going to build it so you can see exactly how I put it all together and the little bits and pieces that I use, as well as how I like it to be set up for the style of videos that I shoot.
So let’s get into it. Here we are with everything we need to set up the Zhiyun Crane. Let’s start with the camera. I have the XT2 and the lens that I use is the Fujifilm 18-55mm lens. This lens is versatile and lightweight, which makes it my favorite lens to use with the Zhiyun Crane. In daylight or well-lit shots, I use the 18-55mm lens. But in low-light situations, like a wedding reception, I switch to the Samyang 12mm F/2 lens. This lens provides a wider focal length and is manual focus.
Zhiyun Crane Assembly
Now, let’s move onto the crane itself. I have everything that comes standard with the crane in the box, as well as spare batteries that I purchased myself. I also have a quick release plate and dual handles. Let’s start assembling the crane.
First, we need to attach the batteries to the handle. The crane comes with two screws that enable you to attach the camera to the base plate of the crane. However, I use a base plate instead. I’m going to screw the base plate onto the crane using the included screw.
The most popular question I get about using the XT2 with the crane is whether I use the battery grip. The answer is no. It makes balancing the crane difficult and pushes the weight limit of the crane. So I remove the battery grip. Next, I’m going to screw the base plate onto the camera.
Now that the base plate is screwed on, we can easily attach the camera to the crane using the quick-release plate adapter. This makes it convenient to attach and detach the camera without unscrewing anything. I have already balanced the crane, but I need to make some adjustments to get it perfect.
Balance and Settings
When balancing the crane, I want it to stay in one position when I move it in any direction. Currently, it’s slightly tilted to the left, so I’ll adjust that. It’s important to note that when zooming with the XT2, the weight distribution may change slightly, but the motors of the crane are strong enough to handle the difference.
Now that the crane is balanced, it’s ready to shoot. I can power on the gimbal and the camera, and even when zooming in, there is no movement. It’s rock-solid. The only modification I’ve made to the gimbal itself is adjusting the tilt speed. This setup allows me to get smooth shots and achieve the shots I want with ease.
