My Portrait Lighting Kit (feat. the Godox AD200)

Introduction

I have been a studio photographer for many years, working with various types of photography such as portraits, products, and food. However, carrying around heavy and bulky lighting equipment has always been a challenge. In the past, I used Bowens lights which were great, but the lack of portable power packs meant I had to rely on wall outlets. This meant I had to lug around big roller bags filled with heavy lights. I then discovered the Godox AD200, a portable lighting solution that has revolutionized my portrait photography setup.

The Evolution of my Lighting Kit

In 2017, I traveled to Namibia to shoot portraits and realized the need for a more travel-friendly lighting kit. I started with the Alien Bees 800 and a Little Vagabond mini battery pack, which was already lighter than the Bowens lights but still quite cumbersome for a single light setup. After that trip, I began searching for lighter alternatives and came across the Godox AD200.

The Godox AD200

The Godox AD200 is a compact and versatile lighting solution that fits in the palm of your hand. It provides the power of three speedlights with the convenience of high-speed sync. This feature allows me to shoot with strobe and ambient light, even in outdoor settings. The light has a detachable head, giving me the option to switch between a normal speedlight head and a bare bulb studio head.

The Benefits of the Godox AD200

One of the main advantages of the Godox AD200 is its portability. It is lightweight, compact, and can fit in a pocket within my camera bag. This means I no longer need a separate bag just for my lights. Additionally, the battery is rechargeable, so I can charge it on the go using the included charger. The AD200 also offers a range of accessories, such as softboxes and umbrellas, compatible with its bare bulb head.

My New Lighting Case

To store and transport my lighting equipment, I use a Calumet WT1 106 case, which is similar to a Pelican case but at a more affordable price. The case is sturdy and customizable, with foam dividers that can be rearranged to securely fit all my gear. Inside the case, I have organized my Godox AD200 lights, chargers, and other accessories.

Building my Portable Portrait Lighting Kit

Since my trip to Namibia in 2017, I have been gradually building my portable portrait lighting kit around the Godox AD200. This kit allows me to have multiple light setups and provides me with flexibility in various shooting scenarios.

Conclusion

The Godox AD200 has transformed my portrait photography workflow. Its portability, power, and versatility have allowed me to simplify my lighting setup and focus more on capturing great quality portraits. With this kit, I can shoot indoors or outdoors, with or without power, and produce stunning portraits on the go. If you are a photographer looking for a compact and reliable lighting solution, I highly recommend considering the Godox AD200.
