What is B Roll?

B Roll refers to supplemental footage captured to make a story more visually rich. It includes any footage shot outside of interviews or main narrative sections to add visual interest to a video. In my previous video with Martin, the A Roll consisted of him talking to the camera, while the B Roll featured him in action on the streets.

My Early Filmmaking Gear

When I first started filming, I used to carry an excessive amount of gear, including sliders, tripods, drones, gimbals, and GoPros. I believed that the more equipment I had, and the more tricks I used, the better the storytelling would be. However, during a rainy shoot in New York, I realized that I didn’t even use most of the gear I had brought with me. This experience made me question the need for excessive gear and inspired me to adopt a minimalist approach to filmmaking.

The Benefits of a Minimalist Approach

Since that rainy shoot in 2014, I have decided to strip down my gear, especially when it comes to shooting B Roll. This approach allows me to simplify my filmmaking process without compromising on the quality of the footage. With a minimalist setup, I can focus on capturing the essence of the story rather than getting caught up in the technicalities of equipment.

The Equipment I Use

For shooting B Roll, I have narrowed down my gear to three essential items: one camera, one lens, and one filter. The camera I use is the Sony A7iii. While I don’t recommend this camera to everyone, it suits my needs perfectly. The main reason I chose the Sony A7iii is because of its full-frame sensor, which allows me greater control over depth of field and performs well in low-light conditions.

In addition to the camera, I use the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens. This lens provides me with the versatility I need to capture different types of shots while maintaining a consistent look. The f2.8 aperture allows for beautiful background separation, adding depth to my footage.

Lastly, I use a filter to enhance the visual quality of my shots. The specific filter I use depends on the shooting conditions, but it helps to reduce glare and improve overall image clarity.

Features that Enhance my Filmmaking Process

The Sony A7iii offers several features that enhance my filmmaking process. The autofocus system is incredibly accurate, especially when using the zone setting. This setting allows me to select specific autofocus areas within the frame, ensuring precise focus on the subject. Additionally, the face detection feature works seamlessly, automatically adjusting focus when a face enters the frame.

Another important feature is the in-body stabilization, which compensates for handshakes and provides more stable shots. This means that I can shoot handheld without the need for a tripod, significantly reducing the amount of gear I have to carry. The in-body stabilization also helps minimize amateurish shake in my footage, ensuring smoother pans and tilts.

Although some filmmakers prefer shooting in 4K resolution, I shoot all my footage in 1080p. This is a personal preference, as I find 4K footage to be overly sharp and digital-looking. For now, 1080p resolution is more than sufficient for my needs and delivers the desired filmic look.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my minimalist approach to filming B Roll allows me to focus on the essence of the story without being weighed down by excessive gear. The Sony A7iii camera, paired with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens, provides me with the necessary tools to capture high-quality footage while maintaining simplicity. By embracing a minimalist mindset, I can streamline my filmmaking process and achieve visually engaging results.
