Yet, despite its exceptional performance, I find myself hesitant to recommend it to everyone. Why is that, you may wonder? Let’s delve into the intriguing backstory of my favorite portrait lens of all time, exploring its incredible capabilities and the factors that make it unsuitable for everyone.
My Favorite Portrait Lens of All Time, But I Can’t Recommend It

The Downfalls of the 200mm f2 Lens
The biggest downside is the attention it attracts. Everyone, including security, seems to be watching when I use this lens. It gives the impression of a big production, which can be uncomfortable. Additionally, the lens has a very long focal length, making it challenging to shoot at a distance.
Shooting with the 200mm f2 lens requires specific settings. I often shoot at high ISO, use a wide aperture of f2, and employ high-speed sync with my flash. These settings allow me to capture incredible shots, even in challenging lighting conditions.
When shooting in direct sunlight, I need to block the sun with a modifier and use only the modified light. Adjusting the height and angle of the light helps create the desired shadow and exposure. Combining these techniques with the Canon R5 camera produces stunning results.
Using the lens creatively, I’ve found several unique locations that enhance the portraits. For example, shooting from a path at a slight angle with greenery in the background creates beautiful bokeh. Experimenting with different levels and angles adds depth and character to the images.
The Pros and Cons of the 200mm f2 Lens
Now, let’s discuss the pros and cons of using this lens:

- Forces you to see the world differently and challenge yourself compositionally
- Has a cool factor, making you look like a professional

Cons:

- Large and heavy, making it challenging to handhold
- Requires significant space for full-body shots or capturing the environment
- Occasional focusing issues, especially when adapted to the Canon R5
Despite the cons, the 200mm f2 lens remains my all-time favorite. Its sharpness, speed, and unique look outweigh the drawbacks. It allows me to capture stunning portraits and stand out as a photographer. This lens truly holds a special place in my heart and my kit.
