Leica M11: 60 Megapixel Maximum M (and Why I’m Buying One)

Hey everybody, I’m Hugh Brownstone for Three Blind Men and an Elephant. Today, I want to talk about the Leica M11 and why I’m buying one. The M11 boasts a 60-megapixel backlit sensor and Maestro three processor, making it a powerful camera. While it may not have all the features on everyone’s wish list, such as weather sealing and integrated EVF compatibility, I believe it is still worth investing in. In this article, I will discuss my reasons for purchasing the M11 and share my excitement for this new addition to the Leica M series.

Why I’m Buying the Leica M11

First and foremost, I have been eagerly awaiting the release of the M11 for several years now. After selling my M8 in 2012, I have been patiently waiting for a worthy successor. I came close to purchasing the M10D and M10R as companions to my SL2, but ultimately decided to wait for the M11. Now, the time has come, and I have already placed my order. Here’s why:

The Perfect Photographic Companion

For me, a Leica M is more than just a camera. It represents a culmination of my personal photographic journey. It’s a modern-day version of my childhood experience with photography. The Leica M serves as a vessel of human history, a lens through which I experience the world. It whispers to me, encouraging me to do better and make my work count. The M11 is another step in this journey, allowing me to further explore my passion for photography.

Incredible Resolution

The M11 offers significantly more resolution compared to its predecessors, making it ideal for capturing detailed images. This is important to me because I enjoy printing my work, and higher resolution allows for larger prints. With the M10R and M10 Monochrome, I already experienced the value of high resolution, especially when paired with my existing Leica M lenses. The increase in resolution in the M11 is truly exciting and will undoubtedly take my photography to new heights.

Improved Battery Life

The M11 comes with a significant battery life improvement, which is great news for those who rely on their camera’s rear screen or optional tiltable EVF. Previous models, like the M10 series, were known for draining batteries quickly. With the M11, I can focus on shooting without constantly worrying about running out of battery power.

Manual ISO Control

A notable feature of the M11 is the ability to change ISO manually. This is an essential aspect of how I work, as I prefer to have control over my camera’s settings. With the customizable ISO settings on the M11, I can easily adjust the ISO by using the assignable rear scroll wheel. This feature ensures that I can quickly adapt to changing lighting conditions while shooting on the streets of New York.

Tiltable OLED EVF

The M11 offers a new optional tiltable 3.7 million-dot OLED EVF. While I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, I believe it will be a valuable tool for precise focusing, depth of field preview, and exposure preview. Although I am curious about the design changes compared to previous models, I am confident that the improved EVF will enhance my shooting experience.

Additional Features

Aside from the significant improvements mentioned above, the M11 also includes other features that I find appealing. These include multi-field metering, electronic shutter up to 1/16000th of a second, 64GB of permanent internal storage, and a single weather-sealed USB-C port for charging and data transfer. These features add value and convenience to my photography workflow.

In conclusion, the Leica M11 offers a range of compelling features that make it a worthy investment for me. The incredible resolution, improved battery life, manual ISO control, and optional OLED EVF are all factors that contribute to my decision. Additionally, the M11 aligns with my personal photographic journey and serves as a companion to my existing SL2. While my reasons for choosing the M11 may not be the same as yours, I hope this article has provided some insights into my excitement for this new addition to the Leica M series.
