Leica M10 Monochrom: First Impressions

Hey everybody, I’m Hugh Bronson for Three Blind Men and an Elephant and today I want to give you an early hands-on take, a preview really, of the just-announced Leica M10 Monochrom. But before I do, I want to share with you that registration is now open for our 2020 Streets of New York street photography workshops. These workshops offer a unique mix of technique, history, philosophy, ethics, and private tours. We’ll be holding our class sessions at the beautiful Leica Experience Studio in New York.

Leica M10 Monochrom Overview

The Leica M10 Monochrom can be thought of as a 41-megapixel black-and-white-only version of Leica’s outstanding M 10 P, sans the left side top plate engraving. Priced $500 more than the already impressive M 10 P, and capable of greater detail and tonality, this camera is a specialized tool for black-and-white photographers.

Hands-On Experience

I spent two hours with the camera last week in New York, shooting with three different lenses: a Summicron-M 28, a black chrome edition Apo-Summicron-M 50, and the brand new Summilux-M 91.5. The price of these lenses gives perspective to the investment in this camera, but the results are worth it. The image quality of the M10 Monochrom is extraordinary, particularly when using high-quality glass.

However, focusing with the rangefinder can be challenging, especially when using lenses wide open. To get the best results, it may be necessary to use better eyes or consider using an EVF for precise focusing.

Monochrom Capabilities

The Leica M10 Monochrom offers unparalleled tonality and detail, but it’s essential to use the very best glass to truly unlock its potential. In broad daylight, the difference in contrast and sharpness between lenses is noticeable, demonstrating the need for top-tier glass to pair with this camera.

Overall, the Leica M10 Monochrom is a specialized tool for photographers who are dedicated to black-and-white photography and demand the utmost quality from their equipment. With the right gear and technique, this camera is capable of producing extraordinary results.
