Giving Up Premiere Pro for DaVinci Resolve

I guess you were expecting Peter here but he’s away on vacation, so you have me, Captain Kirk, the wizard of post-production. We have been working together for almost five years now, primarily using Adobe Premiere Pro. However, in the past few months, we have been experiencing difficulties with Premiere and decided to switch over to DaVinci Resolve.

Challenges in Switching

Switching to DaVinci was not an easy task, as Premiere had become a muscle memory for us. The layout, buttons, and shortcuts were all ingrained in our workflow, making the transition difficult. Despite the challenges, we decided to take on this new challenge and explore the features of DaVinci Resolve.

Advantages of DaVinci Resolve

One of the primary reasons for switching over to DaVinci was its affordability. DaVinci Resolve is free with nearly all the features of the full paid version, which is reasonably priced. Additionally, DaVinci is owned by Blackmagic, known for their hardware, and purchasing certain hardware products can grant you a free license for DaVinci.

We were excited to learn DaVinci and even invested in speed editors and a micro panel to enhance our editing experience. While the transition was challenging, we managed to grasp the basics and explore the unique features of DaVinci.

Performance and Speed

One of the notable advantages of DaVinci Resolve is its performance and speed. Unlike Premiere, which often crashes, DaVinci has a live save feature that automatically saves your work with each change. This saves time and ensures that your progress is not lost.

Furthermore, DaVinci is faster in rendering and timeline speed, even on relatively slower machines. The rendering speed is significantly faster than Premiere, with a 10-minute video exporting in half the time compared to Premiere. The smooth playback in DaVinci, especially with 4K footage, is another highlight of its performance.

User Interface and Features

The user interface of DaVinci may be intimidating at first, especially for Premiere users accustomed to a different layout. DaVinci breaks down editing into phases, such as importing footage, cutting, editing, adding effects, coloring, audio mastering, and rendering. Once you get used to this structure, you realize the efficiency of the different tabs and tools available in DaVinci.

One standout feature of DaVinci is its default effects, which simplify the editing process. Instead of creating effects from scratch in Premiere or After Effects, DaVinci offers built-in effects that enhance the visual quality of your footage with a simple drag-and-drop action.

Conclusion

While the transition from Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve presented challenges, the overall experience has been rewarding. DaVinci’s affordability, performance, speed, and user-friendly features make it a compelling option for video editing. Despite the initial learning curve, we are excited to explore the full potential of DaVinci Resolve and enhance our editing capabilities.
