IGTV vs YouTube: How to use Instagram TV to grow your brand!

It’s official, I’m quitting YouTube and moving over to IGTV…just kidding! Absolutely just kidding! Sorry about that. What is up, people? Dunna here, and today we are talking about IGTV. If you haven’t heard, recently Instagram decided to launch a whole new platform called IGTV. They announced that their platform on Instagram had recently reached 1 billion monthly active users, which is absolutely mind-blowing. But let’s dive in and explore IGTV.

Similarities between IGTV and YouTube

The main similarity between IGTV and YouTube is the ability to create long-form video content. Up until now, Instagram only allowed one-minute videos or 15-second videos on Instagram stories, but on IGTV, you can upload HD and Ultra HD content for up to an hour (or 15 minutes for non-verified or smaller accounts). This makes IGTV very similar to YouTube in terms of video length.

Differences between IGTV and YouTube

The biggest difference between IGTV and YouTube is the vertical video format. IGTV is built for vertical video, with a 9:16 aspect ratio, as it is a mobile-only platform. This is a departure from YouTube’s traditional 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Additionally, IGTV is not a search engine like YouTube. While you can search for hashtags and users on IGTV, you can’t search for specific content using longtail keywords like you can on YouTube.

Will IGTV take over YouTube?

While IGTV has some great features, there are still some problems that need to be addressed. For example, Instagram lacks direct linking, making it difficult to redirect users to external sites. Additionally, the search function and comment interaction on IGTV need improvement. Therefore, it is unlikely that IGTV will overtake YouTube in the near future.

Who is IGTV for?

IGTV is primarily targeted at content creators. It provides an additional platform to showcase their videos. Ideally, videos on IGTV should be around two to three minutes long, as Instagram users prefer shorter content. This makes it great for lifestyle channels, quick food-based channels like Tasty, and vloggers. Vlogs, in particular, are well-suited for IGTV as they are typically not searchable content and rely on existing followers.

Using IGTV to build your personal brand

In order to build your personal brand on IGTV, it is important to leverage the concept of micro content. Instead of creating completely separate content for IGTV, you can repurpose parts of your YouTube videos for IGTV. Frame your YouTube videos in a way that allows for cropping and select one or two-minute clips that can stand alone as IGTV content. This way, you can still maintain consistency across platforms while catering to the preferences of IGTV users.

Overall, IGTV is a promising platform to grow your brand and reach a wider audience. While it may not replace YouTube, it offers unique features and opportunities for content creators. By utilizing IGTV in conjunction with YouTube and other platforms, you can expand your reach and connect with your audience in new and exciting ways. So, embrace IGTV and start growing your personal brand today!
