The Meaning in the Making – First Chapter

The Beginning of a New Journey

At the beginning of 2020, I was approached by Rocky Nook, a U.S publisher, who offered me the opportunity to write a book with them. Fortunately, I had already outlined the book and just needed to find the time to sit down and start writing. Little did I know that the global pandemic was about to hit, forcing us all to stay at home. This unexpected turn of events actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me, as it gave me the time and motivation to focus on writing the best book I possibly could.

A Creative Life Philosophy

The book I have written, titled “The Meaning in the Making,” is a culmination of my creative life philosophy. This philosophy has helped me stay mentally healthy and motivated as a maker of things. While my background is primarily in photography and filmmaking, this book is not limited to individuals in those fields. It is intended for anyone who creates, whether you are a musician, poet, actor, writer, designer, painter, or any other kind of maker.

Philosophy Made Accessible

Despite the term “philosophy,” this book is not filled with complex theories or abstract ideas. I believe that good philosophy should be practical, relatable, and grounded in real-life experiences. While I may reference ideas from greater minds, I strive to connect these concepts to my own personal journey and demonstrate how they have made a tangible impact on my creative process.

The First Chapter: Order

As I lay in a remote corner of Africa, gazing up at the night sky, I was struck by a moment of both terror and exhilaration. The vastness of the cosmos filled me with awe, but also a sense of insignificance. It was in that moment that I realized the power of order amidst the chaos.

The idea of order holding the universe together gave me the courage to face the unknown and embrace the uncertainty of existence. While I trusted in the stability of the world around me, I also acknowledged the transient nature of that order and the inevitability of change.

Whether you attribute this order to a higher power or the laws of the universe, we are all captivated by the delicate balance between order and chaos. This eternal dance reminds us of our place in the grand scheme of things and the fragility of our existence.

Regardless of our beliefs or backgrounds, we are united in our wonder and fear of the mysteries that surround us. It is this awe-inspiring realization that fuels both our curiosity and our dread, propelling us forward in search of meaning in the making.

As you embark on this journey through the pages of my book, may you find inspiration and introspection in the delicate balance of order and chaos that defines the creative process. Embrace the uncertainty, honor the chaos, and discover the profound meaning that lies within the act of creation.
