I don’t want to be a Youtuber

I don’t want to be a YouTuber
Starting a YouTube channel was never about becoming a YouTuber for me. It was about finding a different way to reach my goals and aspirations in filmmaking. As I climbed up the ladder in traditional filmmaking, I realized that I didn’t have the creative control I desired. My role became smaller as I worked with larger production teams, and I often felt that the final product could have been better if I had more control over the editing and color grading process.
I didn’t want to spend my entire career shooting commercials, so I began exploring different options. This was when I discovered YouTube, and simultaneously, I started watching creators like Casey Neistat who showcased a new way of filmmaking through vlogs. It dawned on me that YouTube could be a platform to share what I have learned, teach others, and build my own brand in the process.
Lost in the world of being a YouTuber
However, as my channel grew, I found myself getting caught up in the YouTube world. I became more focused on analytics, strategies, and increasing efficiency. I started to think about short-form content for platforms like TikTok and reels. I lost sight of my initial love for filmmaking. Realizing this, I took a step back and reevaluated my priorities.
My love for filmmaking is still alive, and my channel is now a means to showcase that passion rather than becoming solely a YouTuber. I want to create content that reflects my love for this art form and the opportunities that it has given me.
Rediscovering my passion
Currently, I am using the Alexa Mini LF and DZIO glass for my filming. I have set up a complete lighting setup, focusing on the best quality and getting the shots just right. My channel is about filmmaking, and that is what fuels me.
While I appreciate the opportunities that YouTube has provided me, I don’t want to limit myself to being just a YouTuber. That is why I have ventured into other projects like the feature film with Danny Geverts, the Sasquatch short film, and the creation of a new brand called Human Video Code with my talented friend Grant Fletcher. This brand focuses on filmmaking digital products, such as our latest offering of letter link transitions. These transitions are specifically designed for videos and are currently available for sale.
Returning to my roots
Moving forward, I want to get back to basics on my channel. I want to create tutorials, explore new filmmaking techniques, and learn alongside my audience. I have a particular interest in lighting videos, as it is an area where I feel I can continue to learn and improve. By focusing on my growth as a filmmaker, I believe I can produce better content for you all.
Embracing the filmmaker within
Ultimately, my channel is a stepping stone towards my dream projects, not a replacement for them. I want to create documentaries, feature films, and other exciting endeavors in the filmmaking space. I don’t want to be labeled solely as a YouTuber but rather be recognized as a filmmaker who uses YouTube as a platform to share my passion and knowledge.
I hope this shift in mindset will result in better content, as I embrace my role as a filmmaker first and a YouTuber second. I am excited to continue pushing myself, testing new techniques, and taking my audience along on this filmmaking journey.
