How to Outline Text in Photoshop

Today, I’m going to show you how to outline text in Photoshop. Welcome to Phlearn, where we make learning fun! My name is Aaron NACE, and you can find me on Phlearn.com. In this video, we will learn how to convert simple text into outlined text and hide the interior to only show an outline. We also have a PSD file that you can download to work along with us.

Starting with the PSD

First, let’s start by making all the layers invisible and focusing on the background. We have a color fill layer, followed by text layers such as “Red Lion,” “Food and Drink,” and a logo. We’ll be focusing on the “Red Lion” text for this tutorial.

Creating an Outline

To create an outline for the text, double click on the text layer to bring up the layer style window. We’re looking for the “Stroke” option, which allows us to add an outline to the text. You can adjust the size, opacity, and color of the outline to customize it to your liking. Additionally, you can choose the position of the outline, such as inside, outside, or center. Play around with the blend mode and opacity to achieve the desired effect.

Adjusting Spacing and Hidden Text

If the letters are touching when applying the outline, you can adjust the spacing between the letters by accessing the character menu. Additionally, you can hide the letters themselves and only show the outline by adjusting the fill and opacity options in the layers panel.

With these simple steps, you can easily outline text in Photoshop and create stunning effects. Experiment with different settings and unleash your creativity!
